Nothing but the back of the net.

Mexico came riding into their group match against Chile on a high horse.

The Mexican squad was coming off a skill full 4-2 dismantling of the USA squad in finals of the CONCACAF.

The Mexicans drew first blood in the 40th minute. Nestor Alejandro Araujo Razo flat out beat the keeper on a brilliant shot.

Mexico 1-0 on a great counter attack.

Chile had the most of the possession however they couldn’t crack the code.

Give La Roja credit.

They didn’t fold up their tents and quit after Mexico scored first.

The Chileans pressed the attack until the 66th minute.

Esteban Paredes poked in the rebounded off a missed shot.

Five minutes later 72nd minute La Roja scored the match winner.

Mate Arturo Vidal nailed a perfectly placed header top shelf right to seal the deal.

This sucker was set up by a great corner kick by Matias Fernandez.

2-1 Chile.

In the Uruguay Peru match it was a different story.

The Peruvians scored first in the 23rd minute.

Jose Paolo Guerrero broke free at the Midfield line.

He left the entire Uruguayan side in his wake.

Guerrero forced the keeper to come off his line.

He deeked left and went right.

Nestor Fernando Muslera handed his jock to the Peruvian forward Guerrero.

All he had to do was deposit the ball into the back of the net.

Charruas didn’t quit.

Uruguay kept attacking Peru. This forced La Roja to make a mistake, which they paid dearly for, in the 45th minute.

Luis Suarez took straight to the rack. He rammed this baby through the back of the net.

The second half was a scoreless draw.

Peru and Uruguay tied at one all.

The Copa America continues play on Monday July 4th. Mexico will battle Chile.

Uruguay battles Peru.

This will be Mexico’s first major testing outside of their comfort zone.

Mexico has an emerging super star Javier Hernandez.

Chicharito has taken the EPL and now CONCACAF by storm. Let’s see how this cat will perform on a bigger stage against some of the worlds best futebol clubs.

The Chileans made the 2010 World Cup.

Los Roja made it to the quarterfinals.

Peru is not a very good futebol side.

Los Blanquirroja has played in four World Cups since it’s inception in 1930.

Peru has had some success in the Copa America.

Los Blanquirroja has won the Copa America twice in 1939 and 1975.

From 1997-2007 Peru finished fourth in 1997 and in 2001, 2004, 2007 they have made it to the quarterfinals.

Uruguay won the first World Cup in 1930. In 1950 the Uruguayans defeated Brasil to win the whole enchelidda.

Uruguay finished fourth in 1954, 1970, and 2010.

In the Copa America, Uruguayans won the Copa America 14 times.

Uruguay won its last crown in 1995.

Argentina has won the 14 times and Brasil has eight titles.

Mexico was runner up twice in 1993 and 2001.

Prior to 1975 only South American countries played in the tourney.

It was called the South American Championship until it was changed to the Copa America in 1975.

Mexico, the USA, Costa Rica, Canada, and Honduras have been invited to play.

Mexico has been playing in the Copa since 1993.

The Mexicans have had some good success in Copa.

Way to go guys England snatched a sure draw from the jaws of victory against Ghana in an international friendly.

Andy Carroll was told by Fabio Capello dude you gotta curb your drinking. Carroll heeded Capello’s warning and scored Three Lions only goal of the match in the 43rd minute.

Asamoah Gyan ruined Carroll’s night by scoring the tying goal in the 90th minute.

Gyan made the entire English “D” look like a bunch of schoolgirls trying to catch Bob Hayes.

This cat faked the Three Lions defenders out of their collective jocks.

I bet my friend Tophatal had a fit when he saw his mates do the choke city in the final moments.

Tophatal is right.

Capello needs to go.

The English “D” especially late in the match looked a step slow.

England also lacks a killer instinct.

The guys didn’t attack when they had the chance. They didn’t finish when Three Lions had the chance.

You saw the result of this folly.

Goal.

Lose your butt in process.

Let’s remember this England didn’t play their top players due having played on Saturday in European qualifying match against Wales.

The truth be told England didn’t look all that impressive against an inferior Welch side.

Chile defeated Colombia 2-0.

Uruguay jumped out to an early 3-1 lead and hung on for a 3-2 win over Ireland.

Uruguay was a semifinalist in the 2010 World Cup.

Ireland played the JV team while Uruguay was stunned by Estonia 1-0 last Friday in the snow.

This marks the second time in a row Germany has finished third in the World Cup competition.

Germany finished third in 2006 World Cup competition played on German soil.

The Germans defeated Uruguay 3-2.

This was racehorse style futebol.

It was up and down the pitch.

I love this style of futebol.

In hoops terms we call this fast break basketball.

Slam jam thank you in your face dipsy do dunk-a-roo.

Germany drew first blood in the 19th minute.

Thomas Muller nailed home the board off a long miss in the by mate Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Uruguayan keeper Fernando Muslera blocked the initial shot but the rebound came straight to Muller who nailed the winner.

This was Muller’s fifth goal of the World Cup.

Uruguay found the equalizer in the 28th minute.

Edinson Cavani beat the keeper one on one to this baby up at one all.

This was a classic three on two break.

Germany was hung out to dry after a turnover at midfield.

Diego Forlan one timed a perfect pass into the back of the net in the 51st minute to give Uruguay a 2-1 lead.

Germany not to be denied scored in the 56th minute.

Keeper Muslera came out to the stop the pass into the box. He completely misplayed the ball this allowed Marcel Jansen a open net to shot. Bingo the baby is tied up at two all.

Germany nailed the match winner in the 82nd minute off a wild scramble ball off a corner kick.

German Sami Khedira pocked home the header for a 3-2 win.

Forlan had once last chance in the 91st minute but his free kick from just outside the top of the box went ker plunk off the cross bar.

Game, set, and match to Germany.

This marked the second time Germany beat Uruguay in the third place game.

Pior to 2010 this happened in 1970.

This was the last time Uruguay made to the World Cup semifinals.

A few World Cup notes.

Germany is the first team in World Cup history to finish third for the fourth time.

Let’s hope today’s final will live up to the hype.

The Dutch have made to the World Cup Finals. This marks the first time the Netherlands have made to the Word Cup Finals since 1978.

The Dutch lost Argentina in the 1978 finals.

Netherlands beat Uruguay 3-2.

The Dutch drew first blood when Giovanni Van Bronckhorst nailed a long  range missile in the 18th minute.

Uruguay tied this baby up one all in the 40th minute. Forlan hit the sweet spot in the back of the net off a deadly free kick from 25 yards out.

Uruguay put a strong fight against the mighty Dutch for most of the match.

Goals by Wesley Sneijder in the 70th minute and Arjen Robben in the 73rd minute broke wide open a one all match.

Sure, Uruguay added a cosmetic goal by Maxi Pereira in the 90th minute to make it a respectable 3-2.

The Uruguayans had two really good chances in the 93rd minute but missed it by that much.

The Netherlands has never won the World Cup.

With they finally break into the win column?

We will find out Sunday.

Germany-Spain will be played later today.

This will be a classic.

Germany is going for their fourth World Cup while Spain has never made this far.

The Germans last won the title in 1990.

Spain has lots of talent but nothing to show for it.

Will Cesc Fabregas, Xavi Hernandez, David Villa, and Fernando Torres.

Germany has the pedigree.

Miroslav Klose, Thomas Muller, Mesut Ozil, and Phillip Lahm will provide lots of trouble for the Spanish.

These two teams met in the European championship.

Spain won.

This will be a classic.

The 2010 World Cup is almost in the books.

We have a slight break until the semifinals are played on Tuesday and Wednesday.

This World Cup is chalk full of surprises.

Who would thunk it that four South American teams would have made it to the quarterfinals.

The biggest surprise was the ease with which the Germans dismantled Argentina.

Germany flat out took Argentinos to the woodshed.

4-0 was a massacre of enormous proportions.

Maradona was the darling of the press but he can’t coach worth a lick.

Argentina had the best strike force in the world but if the coach doesn’t make adjustments, you lose.

Just ask Maradona.

The Netherlands come from behind win over Brasil.

When Brasil is leading at halftime, they had a perfect record.

Not this time.

Brasil fell apart after scoring the first goal.

This is totally uncharacteristic of Brasil.

The own goal and the leg stomp killed em.

Both sides were chippy from the outset.

Brasil lost its cool.

Brasileiros failed in its first real test.

Dunga won’t be back as manager.

Brasil is at least one player away from being a dominant force in world futebol.

Spain may become the first team to win a World Cup after losing their first match.

Germany-Spain will be a classic.

Talk about classic. How about Spain-Paraguay? Two missed PK’s and the off the left post goal late in the match to send the Spanish to the semifinals.

My hat is off to Paraguay.

Many of the so-called pundits predicated a Spain blowout.

Uruguay is seeking their third World Cup title.

Uruguay hasn’t won the World Cup since 1950.

These are just some of my observations of World Cup.

More to come on Tuesday.

This is a very sad household today.

Brasil lost to the Netherlands 2-1.

Both my wife and I are very sad after Brasil fell apart in the second half. This is the first time Brasil failed to win after leading at half time in a World Cup match.

Robinho nailed the winner in the 10th minute to give us a 1-0 lead.

A great pass set this up from Felipe Melo.

Then all hell broke loose.

Brasil fell apart.

Felipe Melo and keeper Julio Cesar had a little mix up. Melo stepped in front of Cesar. The ball bounces off of Melo’s head into the back of the net. It’s tied one all in the 53rd minute.

This was the match changer.

The Dutch turned up the heat..

Wesley Sneijder nailed a great header in the 68th minute to send all of Brasil on suicide watch.

Melo freaked and decided to stomp on Netherlands Arlen Robben’s ankle.

This was dumb. It was beyond dumb. It was stupid.

He gets 86th in the 73rd minute.

Dutch coach was down right pissed by the Melo’s dirty play. Brasil should ashamed of the way they acted.

O volante brasileiro achou o cartão vermelho injusto.

Kiss the ball game bye-bye.

Cooler heads should have prevailed but this is the South American way. Fall behind. Lose your cool.

Voce vai.

The entire nation wants to fix the blame on Dunga.

Yes, he is the coach but this team played better than the 2006 fat out of shape stars.

You can say what you want but it is easy to win as a front-runner but the real test is when a team falls behind and has to crawl back and win.

This takes heart.

Maybe Brasil doesn’t have the heart to do this.

This loss shocked the entire Brasileiro nation.

Julio Cesar spoke about the loss. He was very sad.

Netherlands showed heart by hanging in there until Brasil made a mistake. The Dutch came back and won. This takes a ton of heart.

UOL wrote that Brasil failed in its first real test in the World Cup. Brasileiros looked good against inferior teams but when they came up against a top team they failed.

Uruguay showed lots of heart by falling behind 1-0 to Ghana.

There was no quit in this dog.

Forlan nailed a perfect free kick from 25 yards out in the 55th minute to tie this sucker up at one all.

Then Luis Suarez swept away a shot on goal in the 120th minute.

Suarez was given the heave-hoe.

Gyan did a choke city. Gyan hit the cross bar. Ker plunk baby. Choke collar time.

Uruguay went on to win in a PK shoot out 4-2.

Next up for Uruguay is the Netherlands in the semi-finals.

What am I going to do with myself?

There is no World Cup futebol to watch on the tube. But cheer up folks Friday is just around the corner. Brasil battles the Netherlands and Uruguay has a hot date with Ghana.

The big question is this. Are you surprised by the results so far?

Yes and no.

I have been stating that Brasil and Argentina are the best teams in the world. Spain and the Netherlands are a close second.

What surprised me was the crappy play of England, France, and defending chump I mean champ Italy.

I loved it seeing the cheating French getting their asses handed to them.

I love it when Italy didn’t make out of the group stage too.

Paraguay took it to them.

How about the strong showing of the South American teams?

No.

I have been a student of South American futebol for fifteen years.

Everyone knows that Brasil and Argentina are the class of South American futebol.

Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay have been making great strides over the years.

Paraguay and Ecuador played in the 2006 World Cup along with Argentina and Brasil.

Only Brasil and Argentina made it to the knockout stage of the 2006 World Cup.

Both Brasil and Argentina were knocked out in the quarterfinals.

South American club teams have been serving as feeder systems for the top-flight leagues in Europe since 2005.

Manchester United’s Sir Alex and Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger have been combing Brasil, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay for the past seven years searching for the best younger futebolers.

Another key is the strength and quality of play in the Copa Libertadores.

The winner of the Copa has given the Champions League titleholder fits in the FIFA World Cup Club futebol championship held every December.

Barcelona needed a late second half goal to send the match with Argentinean side Estudiantes into extra time.

Barcelona needed 120 minutes to beat Estudiantes 2-1 to win the 2009 FIFA World Cup Title championship game.

South American futebol is for real folks.

Four South American sides are in the quarterfinals.

If things work out it could be an all South American semifinals and finals.

Take heed folks futebol in South American is stronger than European futebol.

Trust me on this.

Look for a Brasil-Argentina final.
