This marks the second time in a row Germany has finished third in the World Cup competition.
Germany finished third in 2006 World Cup competition played on German soil.
The Germans defeated Uruguay 3-2.
This was racehorse style futebol.

Uruguayan keeper Fernando Muslera blocked the initial shot but the rebound came straight to Muller who nailed the winner.
This was Muller’s fifth goal of the World Cup.
Uruguay found the equalizer in the 28th minute.
Edinson Cavani beat the keeper one on one to this baby up at one all.
This was a classic three on two break.
Germany was hung out to dry after a turnover at midfield.
Diego Forlan one timed a perfect pass into the back of the net in the 51st minute to give Uruguay a 2-1 lead.
Germany not to be denied scored in the 56th minute.
Keeper Muslera came out to the stop the pass into the box. He completely misplayed the ball this allowed Marcel Jansen a open net to shot. Bingo the baby is tied up at two all.
Germany nailed the match winner in the 82nd minute off a wild scramble ball off a corner kick.
German Sami Khedira pocked home the header for a 3-2 win.
Forlan had once last chance in the 91st minute but his free kick from just outside the top of the box went ker plunk off the cross bar.
Game, set, and match to Germany.
This marked the second time Germany beat Uruguay in the third place game.
Pior to 2010 this happened in 1970.
This was the last time Uruguay made to the World Cup semifinals.
A few World Cup notes.
Germany is the first team in World Cup history to finish third for the fourth time.

The Dutch have made to the World Cup Finals. This marks the first time the Netherlands have made to the Word Cup Finals since 1978.
The Dutch lost Argentina in the 1978 finals.
Netherlands beat Uruguay 3-2.
The Dutch drew first blood when Giovanni Van Bronckhorst nailed a long range missile in the 18th minute.
Uruguay tied this baby up one all in the 40th minute. Forlan hit the sweet spot in the back of the net off a deadly free kick from 25 yards out.
Uruguay put a strong fight against the mighty Dutch for most of the match.
Goals by Wesley Sneijder in the 70th minute and Arjen Robben in the 73rd minute broke wide open a one all match.
Sure, Uruguay added a cosmetic goal by Maxi Pereira in the 90th minute to make it a respectable 3-2.
The Uruguayans had two really good chances in the 93rd minute but missed it by that much.
The Netherlands has never won the World Cup.
With they finally break into the win column?

Germany-Spain will be played later today.
This will be a classic.
Germany is going for their fourth World Cup while Spain has never made this far.
The Germans last won the title in 1990.
Spain has lots of talent but nothing to show for it.
Will Cesc Fabregas, Xavi Hernandez, David Villa, and Fernando Torres.
Germany has the pedigree.
Miroslav Klose, Thomas Muller, Mesut Ozil, and Phillip Lahm will provide lots of trouble for the Spanish.
These two teams met in the European championship.
Spain won.
This will be a classic.

I hate to say this but Maradona was in way over his head. Yes, Argentina looked great against so-so teams. When Argentinos came up against a very good side, they had their heads handed to them.
Germany administered a good old fashioned butt whipping on Argentina 4-0.
If this were a prizefight, this would have been stopped in the eighth round.
Argentina had the name players Tevez, Messi, and Higuain.
Germany took it the Argentines right from the outset.
A huge foul gave Germany a free kick from the edge of the left box.
Bastian Schweinsteiger nailed a perfect free kick into the box.
Argentina “D” fell asleep. This allowed Thomas Muller to poke home the header in the 3rd minute.
Bing presto the match changed on its head.
Germany seized control.
Argentina attempted to attack but the German’s completely stone cold stopped em.
Messi couldn’t crack the code. Neither could Tevez or Higuain.
Three-second half lightening quick counter attacks by Germany sent Argentina packing.
The Germans played classic tic-tack-doe futebol.
This was more like buda bing buda boom.
The boom was of sonic proportions.
Miroslav Klose hit the daily double.
Klose now has 14 World Cup goals.
He is tied for second with countrymen Gerd Muller at 14.
All time golden boot leader is Ronaldo with 15.
I am very happy Argentina lost big time.
This just proves my point.
Maradona was a great player but as a coach, he sucks big time.
Argentina advanced as far as they could with an idiot as a leader.
Argentinos was ill prepared for Germany.
The Germans stacked the middle.
Instead of swinging the ball to the wings, Argentina tried for force the ball up the middle.
This was a dumb.
You take what the “D” gives you.
A real futebol coach would have made adjustments.
Maradona is not a real futebol coach.
This serves you right Argentina.
If you clowns had won, Maradona and his cohorts would have been ego mantic boors.
Stick a fork in Maradona and Argentina are surely done.
Spain eked out a huge 1-nil win over Paraguay.
Two huge PK stops by Paraguay keeper Justo Villar and Spanish keeper Iker Casillas.
It took 83 minutes before Spain cracked the Paraguayan code.
David Villa nailed the rebound winner off the right post in the 83rd minute to Spain to its first World Cup Semifinals.
Spain will take on Germany.
Both of these sides battled each other in the 2008 European Championship.
Paraguay put up a huge fight.
Kudos to Paraguay for their valiant effort against the mighty Spanish but Spain was not to be denied on this day.
Spain is one of the favorites to win the cup.
Will Spain become first World Cup champ that lost it’s opening match?
