Santos picked up a mid week 2-1 win over Fluminense.

Humberto Teixeira Borges hit the daily lotto twice Peixe.

The win moves Santos clear of the bye-bye zone.

Santos leap frogged all the way to 14^th place in the table.

Peixe has 21 points.

Santos is now fours clear of the you’re outta here zone.

Peixe still has a game in hand.

Corinthians is the pole sitter with 37 points.

My boo-Mengaos are in second place with 35 points.

The third spot belongs to Sao Paulo with 34 points.

Flamengo battles cross town rival Vasco on Sunday.

This is another one of those you better win this sucker.

Rubro-Negro has a habit of blowing leads.

If this disturbing trend continues Flamengo will fall off the face of the earth.

Ronaldinho Gaucho is the top goal scorer in Brasileiros Serie A with ten goals.

On Wednesday Flamengo won the second leg of their Copa Sul-Americana.

Mengao defeated Atletico-PR 1-0 to advance to the next round.

Flamengo defeated Furacao 2-0 on aggregate.

Ronaldinho Gaucho scored the only goal of the match in the 73^rd minute.

Up next for Mengao is Chilean side Nacional.

Today is a hodge podge kinda of day.  First off the bat Flamenguista nation is still celebrating Flamengo’s 5-4 win over Santos.

Corinthians is still top dog in Seria A with 28 points.

Sao Paulo is in second place with 25 points.

Mengao has third place to themselves with 24 points.

Palmeiras is in fourth place with 22 big ones.

Up next for Rubro-Negro is Gremio on Saturday

Gremio sits in 14^th place with 13 points.

This sucker will be played in Mengaos house in Rio de Janeiro.

Once again the guys are going to have to come up big.

Thiago Neves, Ronaldinho Gaucho, and Deivid have to ripped the twines big time.

The “D” will have to play a lot better também.

Rubro-Negro’s goal difference is a plus 10 but giving up four goals in their last match will not cut the mustard.

The fall out over Argentina’s early exit in the Copa America resulted in the firing of Sergio Batista.

Batista had Argentinos playing okay in the Copa but still La Albiceleste came up short in their quest for the title.

Look, a club that has the likes Messi, Tevez, Gonzalo Higuain, and Angel Di Maria should be competing for the title instead of barely making it through the group stage and then getting the heave-hoe in the first round of the knockout stage.

This sucks big time.

Now the cat in the hot seat is Alejandro Sabella.

Sabella is a former player who played for River Plate from 1974-1978. He also played in England with Sheffield United and Leeds from 1978-81.

He had a short stint on the national team as well.

Sabella’s only coaching experience is with Estudiantes 2009-2011.

In 2009 his club won the Copa Libertadores. Los Pincharrates lost to Barcelona 2-1 in extra time in the FIFA World Club Cup formally known as the Intercontinental Cup.

In the Clausura 2011 Estudiantes finished in 14^th place with 19 points.

Los Pincharrates won six, tied six and lost seven.

In the 2010 Apertura Sabella’s side won the whole enchilada.

The 2010 Clausura saw Estudiantes finish in 2^nd place.

In the 2009 Apertura Los Pincharrates finished in 8^th place.

The 2009 Clausura Sabella guided the club to a 6^th place finish.

Alejandro Sabella has only coached one club and he has one domestic title and one Copa Libertadores crown.

Lets see how this puppy will work out for Argentina.

Wednesday night Mengao battles Peixe. Santos has not lost in the month of July. Neither has Flamengo but Mengao has two ties while Santos is all “W’s” baby.

This is the difference.

Rubro-Negro has to come up with the “W” if they want to stay in the top four in Serie A.

Mengao has 19 wins compared with Santos’ s 16. There have been 15 ties.

Flamengo has one victory at Peixe’s house since 1976. This historic win came in 2009.

Tonight’s match will be played in Vila Belmiro.

Mid week matches in the Serie A proved to be very enlightening.  Sao Paulo was sitting in the catbird seat but has lost two straight. The Evil Empire has fallen into second place behind Corinthians.

Timao destroyed Tricolor on Sunday and then on Wednesday beat Bahia 1-0.

On Wednesday Sao Paulo lost to Botafogo 2-0.

The Evil Empire holds on to second place.

Palmeiras picked up a huge 2-0 win over Atletico-GO.

Defending champ Fluminense defeated Atletico-PR 3-1.

Newly promoted Figueirense defeated Santos 2-1.

Peixe is struggling big time.

But remember Santos is coming off two huge victories over Penarol to win the Copa Libertadores.

Brasileiro clubs who have won the Copa title have struggled in the early part of the Serie A campaign.

Sao Paulo struggled big time after they won the Copa in 2005.

Corinthians is the main man with 16 points.

Tricolor is in second place with 15 points.

Timao has a game in hand.

Third place belongs to Alviverde with 14 points.

Fogao is in fourth place with 14 points.

Palmeiras is a plus seven while Botafogo is a plus five.

Figueira is in fifth place with 13 points.

My Flamengo guys are in sixth place with 13 points tamben.

Figueirense has four wins compared with Mengao’s three wins.

Santos is in the drop zone.

Peixe is sitting in 17^th place with five points.

Let’s remember the home of Pele has two games in hand.

It is not panic time yet for Santos.

I couldn’t believe it when I saw the score for the Corinthians Sao Paulo match on Sunday night.

Timao handed the evil empire their heads 5-0.

This was a total whitewash.

Tricolor was on a roll. 

Sao Paulo was five for five until the Paulistas had their butts handed to them.

Tricolor is in the pole position with 15 points.

Corinthians is in second place with 13 points.

Timao has a game in hand.

Third place belongs to Palmeiras with 11 points.

Botafogo has 11 points but Fogao is a plus three while Alviverde is a plus 5.

My Flamengo boys jumped three spots to seventh place.

Mengao has 10 points.

Rubro-Negro is the top scoring club in Serie A with 13 goals.

We have only given up six goals.

Only fours sides have given up less.

Three of those clubs are ahead of us in the table. Corinthians has given up three.

Botafogo and Palmeiras each has allowed five

Santos has given up only three but Peixe has only scored five times.

Peixe is in 16^th place with one point.

Santos has two games in hand.

Mengao has a huge return match with Atletico-MG on Wednesday June 29^th.

Lets see how well we can do at Coelho’s house.

Santos won the Copa Libertadores. Peixe defeated archrival and hated foe Penarol 2-1 at Santo’s house in Sao Paulo.

This was Peixe’s first title since 1962.

Pele played for the club at the time.

Jeez folks that’s many moons ago.

Santos made to the finals in 2003 but Peixe lost to Boca Juniors 6-1 on aggregate.

Los Xeneizes destroyed Santos in both legs 2-0 and 3-1.

However this time it was different for Peixe.

Both clubs tied nil-nil in Montevideo.

All Peixe needed to do was win out right.

This is what Santos did.

Neymar’s goal in the 46^th minute was a thing of beauty.

Mate Ganso took the rock straight to the rack. Henrique Ganso stopped at the top of the box and swung a wide pass to Neymar.

Neymar one timed the shot between the keeper and the left post.

Danilo ripped the twines in the 68^th minute.

The Manyas made close when Durval found the back of the net in the 79^th minute.

Close but no cigar for Penarol.

Game, set, and match for Santos.

Santos and Penarol tied nil-nil in Montevideo on Wednesday night in the first leg of the finals of the Copa Libertadores.

Peixe could not come up with the all-important away goal.

The Manyas had many chances to dent the scoreboard but couldn’t find the code.

Penarol wasted three really good scoring opportunities.

The Manyas did score in the 86^th minute but Diego Alonso was ruled offsides.

Peixe was under a ton pressure the entire match but Santos didn’t crack. UOL put it this way- O eco de mais de 55 mil vozes e nem mesmo a história do estádio Centenário e do Peñarol – cinco vezes campeão da Libertadores, abalaram o time do Santos. A equipe de Muricy Ramalho superou a pressão externa e segurou o time uruguaio nesta quarta, em Montevidéu. Um 0 a 0 com figuras de destaque apagadas, mas boas chances de gol.

O time uruguaio só não saiu com a vitória porque teve um gol anulado aos 41 minutos do segundo tempo, quando Alonso completou cruzamento na segunda trave em posição irregular. O resultado deixou o alvinegro a uma simples vitória do terceiro título da América.

The second leg will be played in Peixe’s house in Sao Paulo.

All Santos needs to do is win 1-0 or 2-1 and the crown is theirs.

The Manyas need to win out right or tie at one all or better and Penarol will win their first Copa title in 48 years.

The United States advanced to the knockout stage of CONCACAF.

A stinging goal by Jozy Altidore in the 9^th minute was the difference in this sucker.

The guys should have had at least six more but Guadeloupe keeper Franck Grandel made stop after stop after stop.

At one point it looked a shooting gallery.

Tim Howard almost had the night off but he was forced to make a great save late in the match.

The U.S. squad still does not have the basic passing skills and finishing punch to make them a contender on the world stage.

Sure Clint Dempsey is good but this clown missed two sure gimmie goals.

If Messi was playing it would been nothing but the back of net.

A win is a win and the U.S. is a power in the North America Zone and CONCACAF stage.

On the world stage what do you expected chopped liver?

The guys will take on the reggae boys on Sunday June 19^th.

Jamaica is dangerous squad.

Later tonight the first leg of the Copa Libertadores will be played between Santos and Penarol in Montevideo.

It should be a good one.

Manyas need to win and not give up the all-elusive away goal.

The two big guns Neymar for Peixe and Penarol’s Juan Manuel Olivera should have lots of firepower to display.

The first leg will be played at the Uruguayans house in Montevideo on Wednesday June 15^th.

Peixe has the second leg in their house in Sao Paulo on June 22^nd. 

Santos has one of the best younger players in the world Neymar.

Neymar leads Peixe with five goals. He also leads the club with three assists as well five yellow cards and one Red card.

Santos is considered the favorite.

Penarol’s top scorer is Juan Manuel Olivera with five goals.

The Manyas are a very dangerous club.

Olivera is a great aerial threat so Peixe manager Muricy Ramalho will use a tall defender Bruno Rodrigo in the place of Dracena.  He can’t play due to having been given the heave-hoe in the second leg of Santos match against Cerro Porteno.

Penarol has won 37 Uruguayan titles.

The Manyas have won five Copa titles. The last came in 1987.

Peixe has won two Copa titles. The last won happened in 1963.

Santos made it to the 2003 Copa Libertadores finals but lost to Boca Juniors.

Peixe is the home of futebol great Pele.

Santos is also the home of Brasil’s best rock musician Charlie Brown Junior.

The Copa Libertadores finals are set. Santos battles Penarol for the Copa title.

Penarol scored the lone away goal in this sucker to advance into finals past favorite Velez Sarsfield.

El Fortin won 2-1 at home but lost on away goals 1-0. The aggregate was tied at two all.

The death strike came in the 33^rd minute.

Matias Mier nailed the winner with a great dribble into the box.

His shot flat out beat the keeper top shelf right.

Mate Alejandro Martinuccio set this puppy up with a great pass.

Velez Sarsfield had a chance to advance with a gift PK in the 75^th minute.

Up steps, El Fortin’s Santiago Silva. He wore the choke collar big time.

Silva spilt the uprights.

Penarol is one of the most successful futebol clubs in Uruguayan history.

The Manyas have won five Copa Libertadores. The last title came in 1987.

Santos last won the Copa in 1962.

This should be a classic battle.
