De Futebol
It is really weird not seeing River Plate in the Apertura. River Plate was sent packing earlier this due do to the fact Los Millionaires really stunk the joint out the past three years.
Newcomer A. Rafaela is top dog in the Apertura with nine points.
Boca Juniors is in second place with eight points.
Third place belongs to Racing with eights points.
In fourth place sits Lanus.
Los Xeneizes has a plus five while La Gloriosa Academia has plus four and El Granate has a plus two.
Last weekend A. Rafaela defeated Olimpo 3-1.
Boca and San Lorenzo tied one all.
Racing and Arsenal de Sarandi kissed their sister nil-nil.
Getting back to River Plate. Los Millionaires has 33 division one Argentinos crowns now they will have to claw their way back to the top division.
This is the first time the mighty River Plate has been sent packing.
Los Millionaires lost 3-1 on aggregate to Club Atletico-Belgrano in a two-legged playoff.
Belgrano is in 16th place with three points.
Los Piratas have three draws and one loss so far on the young season.
River Plate is currently in the top spot in Nacional D-2 with seven points.
Los Millionaires have three wins and zero losses.
River Plate is a plus five.
Seven goals for and two against.
Let’s hope Los Millionaires make it back to the big boys.

It is all over but the shouting in the EPL. It is winding down in the Argentina Clausura.
Estudiantes looks like they have the inside track to win the title.
They took care of San Luis on Wednesday night with a 2-1 win.
This victory moved Estudiantes into first place with 36 points.
Argentinos Juniors is a point back in second place 35 points.
Argentinos Juniors doubled up on San Lorenzo 2-1.
This was a huge away win for them.
Godoy Cruz is in third place with 31 points.
Godoy lost to lower level club Rosario Central 2-1.
This lost may have cost them a shot at the title.
Godoy was in first place on May 17th but since then they have lost two out of three.
This is a killer.
The boys from River Plate are in 15th place with 19 points. Los Millonarios picked up a rare 2-1 win over Velez Sarsfield on Friday April 30th.
Los Xeneizos are a touch better in 14th place with 20 points. Boca Juniors defeated Independiente 3-2.
Both River Plate and Boca Juniors have been playing like crap for the past few years.
It has been reported that Riquelme could be quitting Boca once the Clausura ends on May 16th.
This could mark the end of great run for Juan Riquelme at Boca.
Football in America had this to say- One of the greatest players in the history of Argentine football,” was how one TV pundit described him a few weeks ago. It’s a huge epithet to bestow on any player, but in the case of Juan Roman Riquelme, it might be justified.
Riquelme further stated- “Sunday could be my last match for Boca at La Bombonera,” Riquelme told one of the country’s main football TV shows on Monday. “Normally given the current state of contract negotiations] I wouldn’t go on the post-season tour with the rest of the squad.”

Boca finally got off the schnid with a huge 2-0 win over San Lorenzo. Riquelme returned to action for the Los Xeneizes. He led Boca to the win. Riquelme fired a perfect header into the teeth of the box. Mate Matias Gimenez ripped the winner in the fourth minute to give Boca a 1-0 lead.
Riquelme fed his buddy Martin Palermo NOT! Palermo tickled the twines in the 71st minute to secure the win.
Riquelme and Palermo hugged each other after the goal.
Did they bury the Hackett?
I doubt it.
Winning cures all problems.
River Plate reverted to their losing ways. Los Millonarios stunk the joint out in a 1-0 loss to Estudiantes.
River Plate cannot score or win on a consistent basis.
Argentinos Juniors blasted relegation bound Gimnasia La Plata 3-1.
Atletico Tucuman tied two all with Rosario Central. Tucuman was given their walking papers. Adios amigo.
The Clausura looks like this.
Top dog is Estudiantes with 33 points. Argentinos Juniors is in second place with 32 points. Godoy Cruz is third with 31 points.
River Plate dropped to 17th place. Los Millonarios has 16 points.
Boca is a notch better. Los Xeneizes has 17 points.
It is sad to see Boca and River stinking the joint out but it is nice to see clubs like Godoy Cruz, Argentinos Juniors, and Estudiantes compete for the Clausura title.
De Futebol
Boca once again is stinking the joint out. Boca Juniors lost to relegation bound Gimnasia La Plata 1-0.
This is not good. After Abel Alves was given his walking papers Boca responded by thrashing Arsenal 4-0 on Monday.
Boca reverted to their old ways.
With the win Gimnasia moved out of the drop zone
Marco Perez was the hero for Gimnasia when he nailed as screamer of a free kick to seal the deal.
Los Xeneizes are falling apart at the seams. Stars Martine Palermo and Riquelme are fighting. This resulted in Boca losing to bottom feeder Gimnasia.
However, Gimnasia now can breath somewhat easier for they are a step above the heave-hoe zone.
San Lorenzo shut out Huracan 3-0. Newell’s Old Boys and Rosario Central tied nil-nil.
Racing beat Velez Sarsfield 3-1.
River Plate finally tickled the twines. Los Millonarios beat front-runner Godoy 2-1.
Surprise, surprise, surprise River finally came away with a win. It only took River Plate almost a month.
The loss dropped Godoy Cruz outta first place to fourth. Godoy has 28 points.
Estudiantes is in first place with 30 points. Independiente has 30 points too but Estudiantes has a better goal difference a plus fourteen to a plus eight.
Argentinos Juniors is in third place with 29 points.
Argentinos and Arsenal de Sarandi tied two all on Monday.
De Futebol
Boca Juniors reverted to their horrible ways. Los Xeneizes had their heads handed to them by Tigre 3-0.
Carlos Luna hit for the hat trick. He ripped the twines in the 10th, 43rd, and 77th minute.
Boca is really struggling in the Clausura.
With the loss, Los Xeneizes dropped to 17th place.
Boca has eight points in nine matches.
This stinks big time folks.
River Plate shut out Huracan 2-0.
Huracan’s Ezequiel Nicholas Filippetto made a dumb-dumb play. He fired the ball into his own net in the 2nd minute to give River Plate a 1-0 lead.
Gustavo Canales added the insurance goal in the 77th minute.
River Plate has thee wins, three draws, and three losses for 12 points.
Los Millonarios is now in 11th place.
Milton Caraglio scored the match winner in the 88th minute to lift Rosario past San Lorenzo 1-0.
Argentinos Juniors Nicolas Pavlovich was camped near the back post. He slipped the ball past the keeper in the 77th minute.
Racing’s Claudio Yacob missed a PK in the 86th minute.
Argentinos Juniors keeper Luis Ojeda stone cold stopped him.
This save sent Racing to a 1-0 defeat at the hands Argentinos Juniors.
Independiente defeated Chacarita 1-0. Godoy Cruz doubled up Atletico Tucuman 2-1.
The top of the Clausura looks like this.
Independiente is top dog with 20 points. Godoy is second with 18 points. Banfield and Velez Sarsfield are tied for third place with 15 points each.
Let’s turn our attention to the second leg of the Champions League first round knockout stage.
Internazionale Sameul Eto’o scored the match winner in the 77th minute to beat Chelsea 1-0.
Samuel Eto’o took it straight to the rack and beat the keeper Ross Turnbull. He beat Turnbull one on one.
A wicked pass set up this goal from Wesley Sneijder.
It is on to the next round for Jose Mourinho’s side.
When Jose Mourinho was the Blues manager, he never lost a home league game.
Revenge is sweet.
Inter is on to the next round while the Blues are outta here.
CSKA Moscow upset Sevilla 2-1.
CSKA is on to the next round as well.
Aston Villa picked up a huge 2-1 win over Wigan. The difference in the match happened in the 25th minute.
Wigan’s James McCarthy fired the ball into his own net.
The Latics McCarthy misplayed a no pressure ball and shanked this baby into the back of his own net.
Choke City baby.
Wigan’s Gary Caldwell evened this baby up two minutes later (27th minute) however Villa’s James Milner hit the winner 63rd minute.
The win moves Aston Villa into seventh place with 49 points in 28 games.
The race for the final Champions League spot looks like this.
Tottenham has 52 points in 28 matches. Liverpool is in fifth place with 51 points in 30 games. City is in sixth place 50 points in 28 matches.
De Futebol
River Plate finally got off the schnid with a huge 1-0 win over San Lorenzo in the Clausura on Thursday March 4th. Facundo Affranchino ripped the twines in the 69th minute to secure the win for Los Millonarios.
This was River’s first win in three weeks in the Clausura.
With the victory, Los Millionaires move up to tenth spot with nine points.
Boca Juniors and Velez Sarsfield had a good old-fashioned shoot out on Tuesday March 2nd.
Both sides drew at four all.
Gary Medel scored the equalizer for Los Xeneizes in the 89th minute.
Santiago Silva put Sarsfield up 4-3 in the 82nd minute off a wicked strike that flat out beat the keeper.
Boca currently sits in 12th place in Clausura with eight points
Banfield took care of business on Thursday March 4th by soundly thrashing Colon 3-1. Ramirez had for the daily double (13, 90) and Garcia ripped the twines in the 32nd minute to put Colon out of their misery.
Bichi Fuertes added a cosmetic goal off a great free kick in the 86th minute for the Sabaleros’.
Sapito-little toad-Encina hit the match winner in the 86th minute to lift Gimnasia LP past Chacarita.
Godoy sits atop the Clausura with 15 points. Independiente is second with 14 and Banfield is third with 13.
The EPL has two huge matches that will take place on Saturday.
They will go a long way in determining who will win the EPL.
We have a hot date at home with Burnley.
The Gunners will expect Arshavin, Denilson, and Abou Diaby to be ready to play for us in this all-important encounter at Emirates Stadium.
We need to kick butt and take names.
Three points are a must for Arsenal.
Chelsea will have a game in hand. This is due to the fact that the Blues have a quarterfinal FA Cup match with Stoke City.
Manchester United takes a little road trip to Molineux Stadium to take on Wolverhampton.
The Red Devils are struggling mightily on the road. Last road outing on February 20th the boys from Old Trafford had their butts handed to them by Everton 3-1.
Man U stinks on the road.
Man U will be without the services of Michael Owens and Wayne Rooney. Owens will be out for the season with a bad hamstring. Rooney will miss due to a bad wheel. His knee is in bad shape.
Wolves are currently in 17th place with 24 points. Wolverhampton is one-step away from getting the heave-hoe.
Hull City has 24 points too.
The only thing that is saving their sorry season is Wolverhampton has a better goal difference than Hull City.
Wolvers are a minus 24 while Hull City is a minus 29.
De Futebol
Carnavel is underway in Brasil. Vasco and Fluminense battled it out on Saturday in the semifinals of the Taça Guanabara.
Due to Carnavel, Flamengo-Botafogo semi final match will take place on Ash Wednesday February 17th.
Both Po-de-Arroz and Gigante da Colina battled tooth and nail to a nil-nil draw. It came to the dreaded PK shootout. When the dust settled Vasco defeated Fluminense 6-5.
The first round the PK shootout both sides were a perfect five for five.
Enter the sudden death PK shootout round. Up steps Nilton for Vasco. He calmly nails the PK.
Po-de-Arroz sent Alan for the do of die try. Make it and Fluminense sends the PK to the next round. Miss this baby and Po-de-Arroz goes home. Alan’s shot goes clang off the crossbar.
Vasco is on the finals of the Taça Guanabara.
Either Flamengo or Botafogo awaits Gigante da Colina in the finals.
Flamenguistas will be in full throat on Wednesday at Maracana.
Adriano and the guys need to put pedal to the metal. Love and Petkovic need attack and rip the twines early and often.
Rubro-Negro cannot afford to have any defensive brain farts.
Flamengo cannot give up easy goals.
Bruno needs to be sharp.
Mengao cannot play the famous Oh Lay “D”.
Let’s send Botafogo packing.
This should be a battle royal.
Sao Paulo had a close call with Ituano. Tricolor keeper Rogeiro Ceni nailed the PK in the 16th minute to lift Sao Paulo to a hard fought 1-0 win in the Campeonato de Paulista.
Santos came from behind to nip Rio Claro 2-1.
Portuguesa and Corinthians tied at one all.
Santos sits atop the table with 19 points. Botafogo-Sao Paulo is in second place with 17 points. Esporte Clube Santo Andrea is third with 15 points. Corinthians is fourth with 15 points. Sao Paulo is fifth 14 points.
In the Clausura, Velez Sarsfield, Independiente, Colon de Santa Fe, and Godoy all have eight points. Velez is in first with a plus four-goal difference. Independiente is plus three. Colon is third with plus two. Godoy is fourth with a plus two as well.
Velez hung on to first place with a nil-nil draw with San Lorenzo.
Independiente defeated Estudiantes 3-2. Nestor Silvera’s strike in the 44th minute sealed the deal for Independiente.
Boca Juniors took on the chin in a nil-nil tie with bottom feeder Atletico Tucuman.
River Plate lost to Colon de Santa Fe 1-0.
Esteban Fuentes nailed the PK in the 43rd for the only tally of the match.
It sure looks like a long season for both River and Boca.
Boca is in tenth place with five points.
River Plate is in 14th place with four points.
Yes, I know only four points separate the top fourteen places but the top teams are beating the teams they should while Boca tied with bottom feeder Tucuman.
River had four points entering into Sunday’s match with Colon. Colon de Santa Fe had five.
Colon flat out beat River. River Plate gave up a dumb penalty.
River had a chance to make game of it but two of River’s players were given the heave-hoe for committing stupid fouls in the second half.
This just about sums up River Plate’s play, the last two seasons dumb and dumber.

A huge way to go garoto goes out to Banfield for winning their first Argentinean League title in 113 years. El Taladro (The Drill) was founded in 1896. English, Irish, and Scottish immigrants founded the club.
Banfield is located 17 Kilometers south of the center of Buenos Aires. The club is named after Edward Banfield. He was general manager of the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway from 1865-1892.
Banfield was given the nickname El Taladro (The Drill) by the newspaper El Pampero because the forwards on the futebol team drilled the rival defenses.

I knew Boca Juniors would come out loaded for bear in their house the La Bombonera.
This was Boca’s final match of the year. Pride was on the line for Boca Juniors. Lets be really honest Boca was having a crappy year. Los Xeneizes were play like dung. Yes, it was that bad.
Martin Palermo had the daily double for the Genoese. Palermo took it to the rack and was pulled down in the box. Wham. Bam. PK in the 8th minute and Boca were up 1-0.
Palermo fired a wicked strike that ripped the twines in the 61st minute to seal the deal for Boca.
Newell’s Old Boys were hoping for this result. Los Leprosos (The Leapers) now had the opportunity to steal the crown. No way Jose. Newell’s lost to San Lorenzo 2-0. You can kiss the title bye-bye.
El Taladro needed a little bit of luck to win the title. Banfield was locked in scoreless draw with bottom feeder Tigre. Then Bam. Shot. Score. Victor Lopez nails the header in the 85th minute. Game over. El Taladro escaped with a 1-0 win. Hello championship.
Both Boca and River Plate struggled throughout the season. Struggled is a huge understatement. Both teams stunk the joint out. The players should be quartered and shot at dusk for horrible play.
Boca finished in eleventh place with 27 points. River wound up in 13th place with 21 points. ‘
Both Boca and River are two of the most famous and storied clubs in Argentina futebol history.
Boca has won 24 league titles.
Boca’s last title came with the Genoese won the Apertura in 2008.
Since then, the Los Xeneizes have bombed out of the Copa Libertadores, the Clausura, and the 2009 Apertura.
River Plate has won 33 titles in their 108-year history. The Los Millonarios name came about when River Plate bought two players from rival Argentinean futebol clubs in 1931 and 1932. River secured the services of Carlos Peucelle from Sportivo Buenos and Tigre’s Bernabe Ferreyra.
