Internacional held serve on their home court with a 1-0 win over Sao Paulo.
This means Sao Paulo needs to win by two goals at home in Mouribi.
Globo Esporte- Retranca custa caro.
Colorado had the better of it through out the match.
It looked like Tricolor was just hanging on for life.
Sao Paulo is a side that is in complete disarray.
Tricolor keeper Rogerio Ceni must have felt a duck in a shooting gallery.
Internacional scored the only marker of the match in the 67th minute. Giuliano did a spin arama in the box. After he came out of the second spin Giuliano fired a wicked shot that caromed off the left post and into the back of the net.
Sao Paulo keeper Rogerio was dead to rights.
He never had a chance.
This spin move ala Earl “The Pearle” Monroe flat out beat three Tricolor defenders.
One on three should result in a stop but this cat Giuliano showed a flair for the spectacular beating three defenders.
Pele would be proud of this gutsy move.
Game, set, and match to Internacional
Round two is set for next Thursday in Mouribi.
Sao Paulo is in a shambles.
Tricolor has not won in five straight matches.
Sao Paulo has one draw and four losses.
This is not good.

The semifinals of the Copa Libertadores got underway on Tuesday. Universidad de Chile took on Mexican side Chivas at Aztec stadium in Mexico City.
The first leg of this semifinal ended in a one all tie.
The Chilean side put up a good fight in the end Chivas had most of the second half possession but Universidad de Chile’s defense was good enough to hang on for the tie.
Chile scored first when Chivas defender Hector Reynoso couldn’t clear the header. This resulted in a perfect placed head ball by Universidad de Chile’s Juan Manuel Olivera to mate Rafael Olarra. Olarra nailed the noggin shot into the back of the net in the 47th minute.
Chivas found the equalizer in the 51st minute.
Omar Arellano Riveron slipped home the winner off a great header pass from mate Omar Bravo.
The second leg takes place in Santiago, Chile August 3rd.
Wednesday other Copa Libertadores semifinal features two Brasileiro sides Sao Paulo and Internacional.
Both Tricolor and Colorado both hate each other’s guts.
This will be a blood bath.
Sao Paulo enters into this Copa encounter a hurting puppy.
Tricolor has lost three out of their last four Campeonato matches.
Internacional is coming off a huge win 1-0 over Flamengo on Sunday.
Colorado has four straight Campeonato encounters.
This will be a good one.

What am I going to do with myself?
There is no World Cup futebol to watch on the tube. But cheer up folks Friday is just around the corner. Brasil battles the Netherlands and Uruguay has a hot date with Ghana.
The big question is this. Are you surprised by the results so far?
Yes and no.
I have been stating that Brasil and Argentina are the best teams in the world. Spain and the Netherlands are a close second.
What surprised me was the crappy play of England, France, and defending chump I mean champ Italy.
I loved it seeing the cheating French getting their asses handed to them.
I love it when Italy didn’t make out of the group stage too.
Paraguay took it to them.
How about the strong showing of the South American teams?
No.
I have been a student of South American futebol for fifteen years.
Everyone knows that Brasil and Argentina are the class of South American futebol.
Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay have been making great strides over the years.
Paraguay and Ecuador played in the 2006 World Cup along with Argentina and Brasil.
Only Brasil and Argentina made it to the knockout stage of the 2006 World Cup.
Both Brasil and Argentina were knocked out in the quarterfinals.
South American club teams have been serving as feeder systems for the top-flight leagues in Europe since 2005.
Manchester United’s Sir Alex and Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger have been combing Brasil, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay for the past seven years searching for the best younger futebolers.
Another key is the strength and quality of play in the Copa Libertadores.
The winner of the Copa has given the Champions League titleholder fits in the FIFA World Cup Club futebol championship held every December.
Barcelona needed a late second half goal to send the match with Argentinean side Estudiantes into extra time.
Barcelona needed 120 minutes to beat Estudiantes 2-1 to win the 2009 FIFA World Cup Title championship game.
South American futebol is for real folks.
Four South American sides are in the quarterfinals.
If things work out it could be an all South American semifinals and finals.
Take heed folks futebol in South American is stronger than European futebol.
Trust me on this.
Look for a Brasil-Argentina final.

The more things change the more things stay the same. This is deja vu all over again. Ghana defeated the USA 2-1 in extra time.
It took 120 minutes to settle this puppy.
Ghana knocked out the USA of the 2006 World Cup held in Germany.
Yes, we won Group C but the USA came up short when it counted.
Two defensive lapses killed the USA.
Kevin Prince Boateng split the seam in the “D”. He flat out beat a defenseless Tim Howard short post left in the 5th minute.
The USA didn’t quit. We crawled back into the match.
Clint Dempsey took it to the rack. This forced the Ghana defender to foul him.
Up steps the D Man.
Landon Donovan nailed the PK off the right post in the 62nd minute.
Injury time and it was Déjà vu all over again.
Asamoah Gyan beat two American defenders to the ball.
He flipped the shot over Tim Howard’s out stretched hands in the 93rd minute.
The USA is now 0-1-14 in matches when they trailed at half.
These goals were not Tim Howard’s fault.
We played crappy “D” on these two plays that were the turning points of the match.
The USA showed promise but we still have a long way to go in futebol.
I am sad but hey this all part of the game.
Go Brasil.
Uruguay defeated South Korea 2-1.
Luis Suarez hit for the daily double.
Uruguay’s super striker Diego Forlan set up Suarez’s first goal with a great centering pass across the goal crease.
The second goal Suarez dribble to his right. He nailed a curling knuckler that went ker plunk off the right post into the twines.
Uruguay and Ghana will meet in the quarterfinals of the World Cup.
South America’s strong showing in the World Cup surprises the clowns at ESPN however, I am not.
I have been writing about South American futebol for two years.
The pundits used by ESPN are ex-European futebol players. All these guys know is the EPL, Spain, Italy, France, and Germany. They know nothing about South American clubs.
When one thinks about South American futebol only Brasil and Argentina, come to mind. Yet, team like Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay are flying under the radar.
If you want to get a feel for South American futebol watch the Copa Libertadores. I have been follwing the Copa since 1993.
The teams that win the Copa always give the Champions League titleholder fits. Just ask Manchester United, Barcelona, Liverpool, and Inter Milan.
South American futebol is for real folks.
Brasil has a ring for the thumb.
We are going for a ring for the other hand.
Italy has four titles.
Uruguay has won two World Cup titles.
Argentina has two titles too.
Many of the top futebolers are from South America.
Up next Argentina-Mexico and England-Germany.
Sunday will be great.

Mengao dug themselves into a huge hole. Sure, we won the battle but lost the war.
Flamengo defeated Universidad de Chile 2-1 in Santiago, Chile but Mengao lost on away goal difference.
Both Adriano and Vagner Love tickled the twines but Chile’s lone goal in the 63rd killed Flamengo.
Globo Esporte put it this way-O império caiu, é verdade.
We lost so we now have to deal with it.
Universidad de Chile ripped Rubro-Negro at Maracanã 3-2. This was the difference. Sure both sides were tied four all on goals but that pesky three away goals sent Mengao packing.
This stinks.
Bruno made some really great saves to keep Flamengo in the match.
At one point Bruno looked like a sitting duck in shooting gallery.
Adriano played great and so did Love.
The Emperor and Love played like they were on a mission. The Chile coach called them both fat.
Adriano and Vagner Love both said screw you. We will show you how good we both are.
Adriano leg whipped a great bicycle kick into the center of the box. Vagner Love ripped the header in the 46th minute to give Mengao a 1-0 lead at half.
Montillo fired a shot past the outstretched hands of Bruno in the 63rd minute to this baby up at one all.
Adriano found the answer in the 77th minute. The Emperor rifled a winner to give Mengao 2-1 edge.
It was too little too late.
This is the second straight year Mengao has bombed out in the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores.
The semifinals of the Copa Libertadores will be held after the World Cup.
Brasileiro side Sao Paulo advanced to semifinals along with Universidad de Chile, Chivas, and Internacional.
De Futebol
Vagner Love and Adriano may be leaving Flamengo. This is the word out of Mengao.
This stinks.
We can’t afford to lose Adriano and Vagner Love.
Rubro-Negro President Patricia Amorim needs to get axed. Since this idiot took over Mengao, she has taken my beloved Flamengo into the toilet.
I am pissed.
Adriano’s contract ends next June 30th. AC Roma is courting The Emperor. Adriano has a huge choice to make. Stay in Rio or play in Italy and compete for the Champions League crown.
For many this is a no brainer. Pay whatever you need to keep Adriano.
Vagner Love on the other hand has to return to Russian side CSKA on July 10th to finish up his contract.
This will kill us.
At least both players will be ready when we face Universidad de Chile on Thursday.
Mengao needs to win in Santiago by at least two goals.
Boa sorte.
De Futebol
We are two matches into the Campeonato do Brasil and just like last year Corinthians sits atop the table with a perfect six points.
Just like last year, Mengao started out the season playing like crap.
Flamengo should have won against Sao Paulo and Vitoria but we gave up two late goals that cost us dearly.
We have two ties and Rubro-Negro is currently in 13th place.
Sao Paulo is in the same boat.
Tricolor has a tie and a loss.
Last year Sao Paulo was near the bottom of the table until a late run allowed Tricolor to finish second.
Sao Paulo is currently playing in the Copa Libertadores.
This really takes it out of a team.
Just ask Flamengo.
Rubro-Negro lost to Univerisdad de Chile at Maracanã 3-2 on last Wednesday.
Mengao has the second leg in Santiago, Chile on Thursday.
We stink on the road.
So, you might as well stick a fork in Flamengo’s chances of advancing to the next round of the Copa.
We stink.
De Futebol
Mengao stunk the joint at Maracanã on Wednesday night in a 3-2 loss to Universidad de Chile.
The score was closer than the game indicated. Chile jumped out an early 2-0 lead. Both of the Chilean goals were gimmie goals.
Stupid defending by the Flamengo “D” created both.
The press and the fans want to hang this on keeper Bruno.
Globo Esporte wrote this story about Mengao keeper Bruno. The fans were screaming at him instead of the crappy Flamengo defense.
Primeiro surgiu o grito: “Ei, Bruno vai tomar no c…”.
These are the facts. Each on one of the Universidad de Chile goals was easy walk in goals. Mengao’s Swiss cheese “D” made keeper Bruno a sitting duck.
The headman Rogeiro Lourenço must take responsibility for Rubro-Negro’s stinky play. Mengao was not prepared to play.
Since Andrade was fired, Mengao has played like crap.
The blame for this rests squarely on the President of Flamengo’s shoulders.
UOL made this excuse for Mengao by stating the situation is complicated- A complicada situação do Flamengo na Copa Libertadores, ao perder no Maracanã por 3 a 2 para a Universidad do Chile pelas quartas de final, não deverá fazer com que o técnico Rogério Lourenço poupe a equipe no Brasileirão.
Before Rubro-Negro knew what hit them Univerisdad de Chile was up 2-0 after the 24th minute.
Adriano nailed a header in the 38th minute to cut the gap 2-1 at halftime. I thought we had a chance when we Univerisdad de Chile’s Manuel Iturra was given the heave-hoe in the 45th minute however an easy walk short handed goal by Chile’s Alvaro Fernandez in the 47th minute stuck a fork in our chances to pull our chestnuts out of the fire.
No such luck
All in all Mengao played like crap.
We deserved to lose big time.
We did.
I think it is going to be a long season for us Flamenguistas.
De Futebol
Flamengo started out their defense of the Campeonato title with a dud. Mengao and Sao Paulo tied at one all.
Tricolor drew first blood in the 45th minute. A great header at the top of the box set this sucker up. Marcelinho Paraiba spilt the Mengao “D”. This forced Bruno to attack Paraiba. Paraiba feed the ball off to Washington. He slid the ball into the back of the net to give Sao Paulo a 1-0 lead.
Rubro-Negro could have stopped the play but the entire “D” fell asleep.
Flamengo found the equalizer in the 51st minute. Michael slipped a Lolly Pop ball over the top of the Tricolor “D”. Denis Marquez had an easy walk in goal to tie this baby up at one all.
Sao Paulo keeper Rogerio Ceni never had a chance.
Mengao almost lost this sucker in the 90th minute. Tricolor’s Hernanes beat Bruno dead to rights but Flamengo defender David flicked the ball away to keep the tie in tact.
A tie is good but we played like crap.
Flamengo was missing two key players Adriano and Vagner Love.
Headman’s Rogerio Lourenço wanted to save his best players for the next Copa Libertadores match against Universidad de Chile on Wednesday night.
UOL had these words of wisdom- A ausência das principais estrelas em campo é facilmente explicada.
Sao Paulo held key players back as well. Tricolor has a hot date this week in the Copa Libertadores too.
Both sides had numerous chances but both came with zippo-nada.
Flamenguista nation is not happy but we will take it.
De Futebol
Mengao fell behind 2-0 to Timao. Wagner Love hit the back of the net off a wicked tight rope strike in the 49th minute to send Flamengo to the next round of the Copa Libertadores.
The entire Flamenguista nation was in a total depression for the entire first half and through the first five minutes of the second half.
After that, the Flamenguista nation was all happy. My brother in law in Brasil was in total ecstasy.
Sure, Corinthians won the battle 2-1 but we Rubro-Negro won the war.
The fat man Ronaldo scored in the 39th minute.
Mengao started off on the wrong foot. Rubro-Negro defender David found the back of his own net.
Timao’s Danilo headed the ball into the teeth of the Flamengo “D”. David tipped the ball past the helpless Bruno.
Dumb and dummer.
Still a win is a win.
Flamengo is on to the next round.
