The Campeonato de Rio went to Botafogo. Fogao defeated Mengao 2-1. It all came down to a missed PK by the Emperor in the 78^th minute.

UOL put it this way-Fim da hegemonia do Flamengo em Estaduais. Em um clássico cheio de alternativas, com direito a duas expulsões, gols de gringos e defesa de pênalti, o Botafogo conquistou a Taça Rio e, por conseguinte, o Campeonato Estadual ao vencer o Flamengo por 2 a 1, neste domingo, no Maracanã. Botafogo had two PK’s while Flamengo one. The difference Fogao made both of theirs while Rubro-Negro missed big time.

The love man Vagner Love scored for Mengao. He was able to beat the keeper by squeezing the ball into a very tight area. Fogao keeper Jefferson sorta stopped the shot still the ball found it’s way into the back of the net.

Aos 43 minutos, o Botafogo foi prejudicado. Somália recebeu em ótimas condições para marcar o segundo gol. Mas a arbitragem marcou impedimento. Para piorar, em seguida, o Flamengo empatou. Michael fez ótima jogada pela direita em cima de Fahel e cruzou. Adriano, que foi seguro por Fábio Ferreira, ainda conseguiu desviar de cabeça. David apareceu na segunda trave e se abaixou todo para cabecear. Jefferson ainda conseguiu defender. Mas a bola ficou limpa na pequena área e Vagner Love, o artilheiro do Campeonato Carioca, só empurrou para o fundo da rede. Tudo igual. E o atacante correu para comemorar com a torcida. Foi o 15º gol do rubro-negro na competição. O intervalo veio com a torcida rubro-negra avisando que “vai começar a festa”.

Flamengo stunk the joint out against Universidad de Chile on Wednesday night in the Copa Libertadores. Mengao went down in flames 2-1.

This was a horrible performance by Bruno. He was very nervous in net. Bruno was jumpy. He kept on punching the ball out instead of grabbing it.

Globo Esporte had this to say about Bruno’s net minding. He was great against Vasco on Sunday but stunk on Wednesday night.  Herói no último domingo ao defender dois pênaltis de Dodô no clássico contra o Vasco, o goleiro Bruno falhou feio no gol que deu a vitória ao Universidad de Chile por 2 a 1, em Santiago, na noite desta quarta-feira. É a gangorra do futebol. Um dia em alta, outro em baixa. O goleiro aceitou um chute de Seymour de fora da área e viu a bola passar por baixo do seu corpo. E o Flamengo, que descontou com Rodrigo Alvim, conheceu, no estádio Monumental, a primeira derrota nesta Taça Libertadores.

This was not a great showing by Mengao but this won’t kill our chances of advancing out of the Group stage in the Copa Libertadores.

Bruno saved Flamenguistas bacon. Flamengo barely got by Vasco 1-0.

Superman stopped Dodo twice from finding the back of the net on PK’s in the 36^th and 66^th minutes.

Dois pênaltis para o Vasco. Dodô na bola. E Bruno defendeu ambos. O atacante vascaíno saiu de campo vaiado e, em má fase, com um futuro nada animador na Colina. Vinicius Pacheco took it to the rack. Pacheco and Vasco keeper Fernando Prass collided. It should have been no harm no foul. The ref said no way Jose.

Liverpool took care of business at Anfield. The Reds demolished lowly Portsmouth 4-1. Fernando Torres hit the sweet spot twice. He nailed two winners in the 26^th and 77^th minutes.

This was a huge win for the Reds.

Liverpool is now squarely back in the race for the final Champions League spot.

Mengao took care of business in Caracas, Venezuela on Wednesday night. Flamengo took it to the home side and won going away 3-1 in the Copa Libertadores.

Vagner Love continued his torrid scoring pace.

Love hit the daily double.

Rubro-Negro’s first goal was the result of a penalty. Leonardo Moura made a great run into the box. He fired a wicked pass to Petkovic. The ball nipped the hand of Caracas defender Romero.

Magic presto Mengao has a gift.

Love nailed the PK in the 35^th minute to give us a 1-0 lead.

Caracas tied this baby up in the 65^th minute.

Castellin whipped a pass to mate Alvaro. Alvaro flat out beat Bruno to level the match at one all.

Flamengo pressed the attack.

Mengao was rewarded in the 79^th minute.

Vagner Love took it straight to the rack. He fired a rocket that hit the crossbar. The shot went ker plunk into the back of the net.

Mengao was up 2-1.

Rubro-Negro put this puppy away in the 93^rd minute.

Kleberson stole the ball in the Caracas end of the pitch. He whipped a pass to Rodrigo Alvirn.

Alvirn nailed this gimmie to put Caracas out of their misery.

We now are atop Group 8 with six points.

Yes, this was a much-needed win for Mengao in Caracas’s house.

Mengao entered this match with a lot of crazy stuff happening. Adriano had to miss this match because he and his fiancé are fighting.

Besides that, The Emperor is out of shape.

Without Adriano head man Andrade used Love as his lone striker. Petkovic was moved into the midfield. Mengao defender Toro was sent to the sin bin for rough play in the 53^rd minute. This could have cost Mengao the match but the guys sucked it up and powered through being a man down to take the win.

Two bad things happened to Mengao. First Willams was lost due to an injury and then Toro was sent off for his second yellow card. The second card was an ugly foul. The ref had to send him bye-bye.

A partir daí, dois fatos inesperados. O primeiro aconteceu quando Fernando sentiu um problema muscular e teve de deixar o campo. Quando o Flamengo estava com um a menos, Gabriel Cichero deu um drible entre as pernas de Toró, que fez falta feia, recebeu o segundo amarelo e foi expulso. Flamengo defeated Madureira 2-0. The win was not pretty. Fact, Mengao played like crap.

Rubro-Negro should have killed this lower division side but no Flamengo let them hang around to almost the bitter end before a strike by Vagner Love in the 88^th minute put the match out of reach.

Love spilt the “D” on a well placed through ball by Ramon. Love fired the shot over the keeper Jefferson’s head. Top shelf right sealed the deal.

Love should have scored in the 4^th minute but his shot was tipped away by Madureira keeper Jefferson.

Mengao finally scored in the 14^th minute. A well-placed free kick into the goalmouth was batted around until Flamengo’s Fernando corralled the ball and knocked home the winner for a 1-0 Mengao lead.

Vagner Love had another chance in the 28^th minute but his shot flat out missed the mark

Flamenguistas were getting very restless with the stinko play. A chorus of boos was heard throughout Maracanã.

Madureira almost hit the equalizer early in the second half but Bruno swatted away the for sure goal to save Mengao’s hide.

Globo Esporte wrote this – No início do segundo tempo, o Madureira esteve perto do empate aos nove minutos. Bruno entrou na área e bateu à esquerda do gol. Juan respondeu com um cruzamento que quase surpreendeu Jefferson. O goleiro colocou a escanteio.

Thank God for Bruno.

 Love had a great opportunity in the 62^nd minute but Love was a little late getting to the great pass by Vinicius Pacheco in the box.

Love had another gimmie goal in the 78^th minute. Love was one on one with the keeper. He shanked it.

Globo Esporte had this to say- Aos 17 minutos, Vinícius Pacheco cruzou da ponta esquerda e por pouco Vagner Love não alcançou. Sob vaias a todo o time, o Artilheiro do Amor recebeu passe de Vinícius Pacheco, aos 33, entrou cara a cara com Jefferson, mas chutou em cima do goleiro. Vinícius pedia a devolução do passe, mas estava impedido.

The match can be summed up this way. Mengao had a too close to call 1-0 win over Madureira until Vagner Loves’s goal in the dying moments of the match made it 2-0. Chelsea and Inter battled it out in the first round of the knockout stage of the Champions League. Ex-Blues boss Jose Mourinho is the Inter headman. Ex AC Milan headman Carlo Ancelotti is Chelsea’s main man.

Let’s talk about this barnburner of a match. Inter drew first blood in the 3^rd minute. Alberto Diego Milito did a little side step action to the left. This slick move set up this strike that beat keeper Petr Cech to the short post left.

John Terry played horrible “D” on the play.

Chelsea discovered the answer in the 51^st minute. Salomon Kalou was just outside the top of the box. He fired a weak shot that bounced past keepers Julio Cesar’s outstretched left paw. This should have been an easy stop. But no, Cesar flat out blew it.

The match is knotted at one all.

Inter began to apply the pressure on the Blues “D”.

Esteban Cambiasso fired a wicked shot but Didier Drogba blocked it. Rebound. Shot. Score Cambiasso in the 55^th minute.

Inter is up 2-1.

Oh yes, we have a fight on our hands in Internazionale’s house.

Neither side is playing it safe. Chelsea and Inter are playing fast break, racehorse style futebol. I love it.

We have non-stop end-to-end action.

Both sides have had some great scoring opportunities but neither the Blues nor Inter have yet to pull the trigger.

It is all done. Inter defeated Chelsea 2-1.

The Blues picked up the all-important away goal.

Advantage Inter as we head back to Stamford Bridge for the second part of the story. The return match should be another nail bitter.

Lots of Copa Libertadores action on Wednesday.

Flamengo has a hot date with Universidad Catolica at Maracana. The Chilean side is currently in 11^th place in the Chilean Apertura. Catolica has seven points. They are 2-1-3.

Mengao needs to flat out take it to Catolica.

Adriano and Love need to rip the twines.

Bruno will be out with a pulled adductor muscle in his right thigh. Youngster Marcelo Lomba will in goal. I sure hope this doesn’t kill us. This is the grand daddy of em all in South America-The Copa Libertadores.

Rubro-Negro opens the Copa at home then we are on the road for the next two matches.

Mengao travels to Chile to battle Universidad de Chile and Caracas, Venezuela.

Mengao has not tasted victory in first round play of Copa since 1984.

Flamengo needs to stop this schnid now.

Mengao has six draws and two losses in their previous eight Copa openers.

In fifth round FA Cup replay action, Tottenham took it to Bolton 4-0. Super Russian Roman Pavlyuchenko hit for the daily double in the 23^rd and 87^th minute. The Wanderers hit the daily double own goal in the 35^th and 47^th minute.

Spurs are on to the next round of the FA cup.

Aston Villa beat Crystal Palace 3-1 to advance to the next round of the FA Cup.

Reading defeated West Brom 3-2.

Reading’s Brian Howard tied this baby up at two all in 90^th minute to send this guy into thirty minutes of extra time.

Gylfi Sigurdsson hit the match winner in the 95^th minute to send West Brom packing.

Stoke City needed the full 120 minutes to stifle City 3-1. This loss sure puts a damper Man City’s season.

Mengao can blame the ref for not showing the exit to Botafogo’s Fahel but it all comes down to this. If you waste scoring chances and you play defense like a little old lady you will surely lose.

This is exactly what happened to Flamengo in the semifinals of the Taça Guanabara Wednesday night at Maracana.

Flamengo lost to hated foe Botafogo 2-1. Am I sad?  Does a chicken have lips? Does the Pope shit in the woods?

Give me a break. In a span of ten hours on Wednesday, both of my teams have stunk the joint out.

Arsenal decided to play like Monty Hall and Let’s Make a Deal.  Maybe the Gunners were trying to out do Arsenio Hall. This is what I know for sure. This Keystone Cop routine has to stop.

Maybe Arsenal and the Philadelphia Eagles should join forces and shoot themselves in the foot.

Mengao jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Rubro-Negro made a great steal in their defensive end of the pitch. In flash Flamengo rammed the ball down the pitch. In a matter of moments, Pacheco beat two defenders. He walked the ball into the back of the net in the 25^thminute to give us Flamenguistas a 1-0 lead.

I thought Jeez, Mengao is sure looking good.

This was not the case. Adriano and Vagner Love wasted at last six scoring opportunities between them.

Waste not want not was what my mother always told me. For if, you waste scoring chances this will come back and bite you in the butt.

This sure did.

Fogao fired a great long ball into the far edge of the box. A header into the goalmouth.  A shot on goal. Blocked by Bruno. Rebound. One timer by Cordeiro into the back of the net. We are all even at one all in the 34^th minute.

Bruno looked like he was making windmills on the rebound shot.

Mengao decided to take a siesta in the long free kick by Botafogo. The ball is perfectly placed near the top edge of the box. A header to Canedo. He literally walks past two Flamengo defenders and a dumb struck Bruno in the 84^thminute to salt this baby away for Botafogo.

Fogao wins 2-1.

Mengao is sent home packing

What a way to ruin a perfectly good Wednesday for me.

It could have been worse.

A sportswriter once asked former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach John McKay,” How about your teams execution?” McKay replied, “ I am in favor of it.”

Maybe Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger and Flamengo’s Andrade are in favor of their team’s execution as well too.

Carnavel is underway in Brasil. Vasco and Fluminense battled it out on Saturday in the semifinals of the Taça Guanabara.

Due to Carnavel, Flamengo-Botafogo semi final match will take place on Ash Wednesday February 17^th.

Both Po-de-Arroz and Gigante da Colina battled tooth and nail to a nil-nil draw. It came to the dreaded PK shootout. When the dust settled Vasco defeated Fluminense 6-5.

The first round the PK shootout both sides were a perfect five for five.

Enter the sudden death PK shootout round. Up steps Nilton for Vasco. He calmly nails the PK.

Po-de-Arroz sent Alan for the do of die try. Make it and Fluminense sends the PK to the next round. Miss this baby and Po-de-Arroz goes home. Alan’s shot goes clang off the crossbar.

Vasco is on the finals of the Taça Guanabara.

Either Flamengo or Botafogo awaits Gigante da Colina in the finals.

Flamenguistas will be in full throat on Wednesday at Maracana.

Adriano and the guys need to put pedal to the metal. Love and Petkovic need attack and rip the twines early and often.

Rubro-Negro cannot afford to have any defensive brain farts.
Flamengo cannot give up easy goals.

This should be a battle royal.

Sao Paulo had a close call with Ituano. Tricolor keeper Rogeiro Ceni nailed the PK in the 16^th minute to lift Sao Paulo to a hard fought 1-0 win in the Campeonato de Paulista.

Santos came from behind to nip Rio Claro 2-1.

Portuguesa and Corinthians tied at one all.

Santos sits atop the table with 19 points. Botafogo-Sao Paulo is in second place with 17 points. Esporte Clube Santo Andrea is third with 15 points. Corinthians is fourth with 15 points. Sao Paulo is fifth 14 points.

In the Clausura, Velez Sarsfield, Independiente, Colon de Santa Fe, and Godoy all have eight points. Velez is in first with a plus four-goal difference. Independiente is plus three. Colon is third with plus two. Godoy is fourth with a plus two as well.

Velez hung on to first place with a nil-nil draw with San Lorenzo.

Independiente defeated Estudiantes 3-2. Nestor Silvera’s strike in the 44^th minute sealed the deal for Independiente.

Boca Juniors took on the chin in a nil-nil tie with bottom feeder Atletico Tucuman.

River Plate lost to Colon de Santa Fe 1-0.

Esteban Fuentes nailed the PK in the 43^rd for the only tally of the match.

It sure looks like a long season for both River and Boca.

Boca is in tenth place with five points.

River Plate is in 14^th place with four points.

Yes, I know only four points separate the top fourteen places but the top teams are beating the teams they should while Boca tied with bottom feeder Tucuman.

River had four points entering into Sunday’s match with Colon. Colon de Santa Fe had five.

Colon flat out beat River. River Plate gave up a dumb penalty.

River had a chance to make game of it but two of River’s players were given the heave-hoe for committing stupid fouls in the second half. 

This just about sums up River Plate’s play, the last two seasons dumb and dumber.
