The Copa Libertadores is the oldest competition in South America.  It began in 1960. This competition includes clubs from South America and selected clubs from Mexico. Three clubs are chosen to compete from each South American country. Brasil and Argentina each have five clubs allowed to compete.

The clubs are divided into group play. The Group winners and the runner up compete in a knockout stage. The club that makes through the competition is crowned Copa Libertadores Champion.

The Copa winner then competes in the FIFA World Club championship that is held in December.

Santos won the Copa last year. Argentina club Independiente has won the most Copa Titles seven.

Independiente last won the Copa in 1984.

Boca Juniors has won six. Los Xeneizes last title came in 2007.

Sao Paulo and Santos have each won three titles. Tricolor last title came in 2005.

In Wednesday action in the Copa Corinthians defeated Cruz Azul 1-0. Danilo scored the match winner for Timao in the 35^th minute. Corinthians is top dog in Group Six with eight points.

Thursday play features Santos taking on Juan Aurich in Group One play. Peixe is in third place in Group One with six points.

Velez Sarsfield has a hot date with Deportivo Quito in Group Seven play

River Plate is slowly working its way out of the depths of hell Nacional B. Los Millionaires defeated Deportivo Merlo 3-0. This gives River Plate thirteen wins. Los Millionaires sits in second place with 48 points. River Plate trails Instituto de Cordoba by one point. La Gloria beat up Chacarita Juniors 3-1. This gives Instituto de Cordoba 49 points.

The top two sides will be given a get outta jail free card. This means the top two clubs will play in the Primeira Division de Argentina.

Tigre sits atop the Clausura with 14 points. Boca Juniors is in second placed with 13 points.

Los Xeneizes are coming off a 1-0 win over San Martin de San Juan. Tigre and Estudiantes tied one all.

Los Verdinegros last played with the big boys in 1970. This marks the third time that San Martin de San Juan has mixed it up in the Primeira de Argentina. Los Verdinegros is in 12^th place with seven points.

The biggie match that’s taking place in the EPL today is Man City and Chelsea. City needs to win this sucker. So do the Blues for they are in a dogfight for the final two Champions league spots. My guys from Arsenal have a hot date with Everton at the Toffees house. We need to win this sucker if we want to move into third place.

Tottenham battles Stoke City at White Hart Lane.

Spurs are third with 53 points.

My Gunners are fourth at 52.

Chelsea is fifth with 49.

Wenger on changes from the Newcastle match- There are no changes. Vermaelen had a kick on his calf and after the game he had a big pain but he is alright. Diaby is back but he is with the reserves at Liverpool. He will play for an hour.

On Santos-He is fit enough to start but he was like that for the Newcastle game.

On Squillaci He is back in full training now.

The up to date injury list- Coquelin will be the quickest back. It will be a few weeks until he is back in training. It is difficult to set a deadline on Jack. We go week by week with him. But his last scan was very good so we don’t have worry anymore. It is about progress and fitness, however I can’t set a date.

Both Manchester clubs struggled big time in their first round matches in the Europa League. City gave up a goal in the 51^st minute to lose to Sporting Lisbon 1-0.

Xandao cheeky back heel beat the Citizens keeper Joe Hart dead to rights. City played like crap. However the Citizens had a chance to get the equalizer in the final moments.

Man U on the other hand stunk the joint in a 3-2 loss to Atletic Bilbao at Old Trafford. The Rooney man scored twice but this was not enough. Sir Alex and the boys were down right bad against the Spanish side.

Los Leones completely outplayed Man U from start to finish. This is not your typical Sir Alex side. The Red Devils hearts are not into playing in the Europa League. Their play so far has confirmed this. The boys lost at home to Ajax 2-1 in the second leg and now to Atletic Bilbao 3-2 prove my point that Man U would rather go home and concentrate on the EPL.

Sir Alex and the boys only have one win at home in their last five matches in Champions League and Europa League play.

Man U didn’t play their best defenders. Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, and Michael Carrick didn’t start. Only Carrick saw action when he came in for Chris Smalling in the 55^th minute. 

Smalling had to come out when he re injured his head wound suffered in England’s international friendly against the Netherlands last week.

My instincts guided by experience reveals that Man U and City would be bettered served if they did not participate in the Europe League after they bombed out in the Champions League group play.

The second leg matches will be played next week.

In Copa Libertadores play Santos defeated Internacional 3-1.

Fluminense defeated Argentina giant Boca Juniors 2-1 at Los Xeneizes house.

Boca has one tie and one loss in Group Four play.

Corinthians shut out Nacional 2-0.

So far in Group play the Brasileiros sides are playing very well but this can change on a dime.

Fluminense is top dog in Group Four.

Santos sits in second place in Group One.

Vasco is in second place in Group Five.

Peixe is in second place in Group Six.

My guys from Mengao battle Emelec late on Thursday.

Flamengo has one tie and sits in third place in Group Two.

Both Vanger Love and Ronaldinho Gaucho are going to have to score and hope that our crappy “D” will not let us down. Felipe can be a clown in goal at times.

UOL- O Flamengo sofreu esta semana com problemas de cabeça e coração. O goleiro Felipe sofreu pancada e foi parar no hospital. Renato Abreu está afastado com problemas cardíacos. It’s all over about but the shouting in the Apertura.

Boca Juniors won the whole banana.

Los Xeneizes took the top prize with 43 points.

This was Boca’s first title since 2005 when Los Xeneizes won the Apertura.

Racing was second with 31 points.

Velez Sarsfield was third with 31 points.

Racing had a plus eighth compared with Velez’s plus five.

Velez beat Racing 1-0 on the final day of competition but this win was not enough to over come a three-goal lead for Racing.

Demoted to Primera B River Plate beat Patronato de Parana 1-0.

The win moved Los Millionaires into second place with 33 points.

River Plate trails Instituto by two points.

The top two clubs in Primera B get the get outta jail free card.

Let’s see if Los Millionaires can hang in there and get back to the big Leagues.

Newell’s Old Boys are stuck in 19^th place with 14 points.

18^th place belongs to Olimpo.

Sent to outer Siberia River Plate is in second place in D-2 ball.

Los Millionaires sits in second place with 30 points.

First place belongs to Instituto with 32 points.

River Plate in their last three games won one, lost one and tied one.

Los Millionaires is in their house against 12^th place Patronato de Parana.

Los Xeneizes tied with Velez Sarsfield nil-nil.

Racing is second with 24 points.

Sarsfield shut out Argentinos Juniors 1-0.

Sitting in third place is Lanus with 23 points.

Lanus defeated Banfield 2-1.

Fourth place belongs to Atletico Rafaela with 23 points.

Rafaela and Belgrano tied nil-nil.

River Plate was regulated to D-2 ball.

Los Millionaires is top dog with 26 points.

It sure looks like River Plate will be back to the big boys next season.

Los Millionaires destroyed Gimnasia 4-1.

The guys in Europe are off due to the international break.

The EPL will return to action November 19^th.

On Friday Argentina will battle Bolivia in World Cup qualifying.

Uruguay-Chile.

Columbia-Venezuela battle on Saturday.

Paraguay-Ecuador take to the pitch on Saturday também.

A familiar face is a top the leader board of the Apertura. Boca Juniors has risen from the ash heap to first place with 24 points. Los Xeneizes struggled mightily the past few seasons but now the guys have righted the ship and it looks like Boca will win their 24^th domestic title.

Los Xeneizes defeated Tigre 1-0 last Sunday. 

Boca hasn’t lost so far in the Apertura.

Los Xeneizes has seven wins and three draws.

Atletico. Rafaela is in second place with 19 points.

El Leon was sent packing from the top tier in Argentinos futebol in 2007.

El Leon and Central Norte fixed the match. Both sides needed a one all tie and that’s what they agreed on.

A video surfaced to expose the fix and thus Atletico Rafaela was sent down.

Racing is in third place with 18 points.

Colon de Santa Fe is fourth with 17 points.

There are nine matches left in the Apertura.

Anything can happen but it sure looks like Boca will win the whole shooting match.

Ruben Ramirez is the top goal scorer with six. He plays for Godoy Cruz.

Atletico Rafaela’s Dario Gandin has scored five goals.

Los Millionaires was sent packing earlier this year to D-2 ball. River Plate won 33 domestic titles.

This was a kick in groin for Los Millionaires. River Plate has been a top-flight cub for 110 years until July 8, 2011.

Belgrano sent Los Millionaires packing.

Los Piratas is sitting in seventh place with 16 points.

Stranger days are these.

The guys are fighting to get back to D-1 ball.

River Plate is top dog in Nacional B with 16 points.

Los Millionaires has four wins and four draws.

It is really weird not seeing River Plate in the Apertura. River Plate was sent packing earlier this due do to the fact Los Millionaires really stunk the joint out the past three years.

Newcomer A. Rafaela is top dog in the Apertura with nine points.

Boca Juniors is in second place with eight points.

Third place belongs to Racing with eights points.

In fourth place sits Lanus.

Los Xeneizes has a plus five while La Gloriosa Academia has plus four and El Granate has a plus two.

Last weekend A. Rafaela defeated Olimpo 3-1.

Boca and San Lorenzo tied one all.

Racing and Arsenal de Sarandi kissed their sister nil-nil.

Getting back to River Plate. Los Millionaires has 33 division one Argentinos crowns now they will have to claw their way back to the top division.

This is the first time the mighty River Plate has been sent packing.

Los Millionaires lost 3-1 on aggregate to Club Atletico-Belgrano in a two-legged playoff.

Belgrano is in 16^th place with three points.

Los Piratas have three draws and one loss so far on the young season.

River Plate is currently in the top spot in Nacional D-2 with seven points.

Los Millionaires have three wins and zero losses.

River Plate is a plus five.

Seven goals for and two against.

Let’s hope Los Millionaires make it back to the big boys.

It is a glorious two weeks until the EPL season begins. I can’t wait. Now my Saturday’s will be full of futebol.

Where we live in the middle of bum fuck Egypt the cable system and Internet suck big time.

No Globo TV.

The guys are putting the finishing touches on the pre season to get ready for the real deal.

Manchester United marched through the MLS like Sherman marched through Georgia.

None of the matches were close.

Man U destroyed the MLS All Stars 4-0.

This sucker was a total whitewash.

On Saturday night Man U and Barcelona have a rematch of the Champions League finals.

This puppy will be played in Landover, Maryland.

I wouldn’t expect to see the top guys like Messi, Rooney and the rest playing that much if at all.

My guys from Arsenal tied the Argentina club Boca Juniors.

The Gunners led 2-0 and low and behold Arsenal let Los Xeneizes score two goals in four minutes to escape with the tie.

Is this Déjà vu all over again?

Let’s hope not.

I don’t know if I can take another season like 2010-11.

The second half let down-
You never want to concede goals, but overall I do not give too much importance to that. What is important for us it to find a collective rhythm. When we could we managed to play at a good pace for 60 minutes, after it was much more difficult. It was expected, we came back from a training camp in Germany with heavy work and I knew that the second half would be much more difficult.

Boca Juniors are a good team and we got caught counter-attacking when were 2-0 up and we tried to build up the game, but when you are tired you miss some passes and were a bit more under threat.

What lessons did the guys learn- That we can score goals and Gervinho is a good addition to our squad. He is very interesting because he gives us options on both sides and through the middle. He can integrate well with our team. Also we have some improvements to make in some areas, especially the way we win the ball back. On set pieces we were not convincing today, but overall it was quite positive.

On Gervinho-

We can be extremely dangerous on the counter-attack with the players we have, we have Walcott who was not involved today, we have Gervinho and with the midfield we have I believe we can be very quick in the transition to go forwards, so that is always something very interesting. He can add that.   

 What about the future of Nasri and Fabregas-

don’t know. I play the players who are available and Nasri is available so I play him. Yesterday, I made a check up of all our situations and, I must tell you, nothing has moved since yesterday. Not one way, nor another way.

 If Fabregas is committed to this Club and wants to stay, no money will get him out of here. We are not in a position where we need to sell our players. We want to keep our players. We are not looking after money. We want the players to stay here, from our side that is clear.

What about Nickolas Bendtner and Emmanuel Eboue- They are both on the verge of a move but nothing has been concluded with anybody. I don’t have any club in mind for Nicklas Bendtner because we are far from having done anything with anybody. I cannot give you any club because we have given him the permission to move.

Wenger added this getting nothing for Nasri and him staying- It’s not ideal for us on the financial side but, on the sporting side, he is an important player. We have to deal with the situation one way or another. In the next ten days we have to be clear on that front. 

If you ask me if I want to keep him, I say yes. But he needs to be committed to that as well. I don’t give them ten days, the transfer period is until August 31. Ideally, we go into big games in two weeks, in the next two weeks we have to sort out problems out. There is no specific deadline of one day or 24 hours. It’s not like you shoot a shuttle into space. Sometimes it’s very quick on that front and sometimes it’s very slow.

Lots of question to still be answered by my Gunners. So we will see how this sucker plays out.

I don’t want another heart break season but this what one expects when you are a Gunner for life.

Santos won the Copa Libertadores. Peixe defeated archrival and hated foe Penarol 2-1 at Santo’s house in Sao Paulo.

This was Peixe’s first title since 1962.

Pele played for the club at the time.

Jeez folks that’s many moons ago.

Santos made to the finals in 2003 but Peixe lost to Boca Juniors 6-1 on aggregate.

Los Xeneizes destroyed Santos in both legs 2-0 and 3-1.

However this time it was different for Peixe.

Both clubs tied nil-nil in Montevideo.

All Peixe needed to do was win out right.

This is what Santos did.

Neymar’s goal in the 46^th minute was a thing of beauty.

Mate Ganso took the rock straight to the rack. Henrique Ganso stopped at the top of the box and swung a wide pass to Neymar.

Neymar one timed the shot between the keeper and the left post.

Danilo ripped the twines in the 68^th minute.

The Manyas made close when Durval found the back of the net in the 79^th minute.

Close but no cigar for Penarol.

Game, set, and match for Santos.
