River Plate was sent packing for the first time in their illustrious futebol history. Los Millionaires is the most decorated futebol club in Argentinos history now River Plate is hanging out in the Nacional B.
River Plate is making a long climb out of outer Siberia. Los Millionaires is in second place in Primera Nacional B with 33 points. Instituto is top dog with 35 points.
The top two clubs will get a get outta jail free card. So far River Plate is in second place.
Los Millionaires next match is against Chacarita Juniors on February 4th.
River Plate had won 33 domestic titles, five international crowns- two Copa Libertadores titles, one International Cup (FIFA World Club title), one Super Copa Sudamericana crown, and one Copa Interamercana title.
The club was founded in 1901. Now River Plate is attempting to get back to where they belong with big boys.
What killed Los Millionaires was their 75 million dollar debt. Former President Jose Maria Aguilar was fired and Daniel Pasarella replaced him. Shortly thereafter when River Plate was given the heave-hoe manager Juan Jose Lopez resigned.
Matias Almeyda is now River Plate’s manager.
So far so good for Los Millionaires.
The F A Cup is the talk of the town this weekend in England. The headline match is Liverpool-Man U battle. This puppy will be played at the Reds house Anfield.
Liverpool is coming off a huge win over Man City to advance to the finals of the Carling Cup.
This will be the first of two matches. If either one wins the loser is sent packing.
The last time these two clubs met Reds Luis Suarez was given an eight-match ban for racial comments he made to Red Devils Patrice Evra.
Both managers are trying to down play this incident.
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish said this – We want to concentrate on going out and playing football and any other sideshow is purely that, it is just a sideshow.”
“Everyone has a responsibility to uphold the names of their respective club and anyone who reports or comments on the game also has the responsibility to make sure they are not trying to incite trouble. But it is not only the fans who have to behave themselves; we have a responsibility to behave – but that is the case every time.”
Sir Alex said this – “It is a massive game for both clubs. There is a tremendous profile on it and will be interest throughout the country. As Steven Gerrard said, there is a responsibility on the players to behave properly. That is what I expect my players to do.”
FA Cup play on Friday saw Everton defeat Fulham 2-1. The Cottagers drew first blood when the Toffees John Heitinga touched the ball in the box. Fulham’s Danny Murphy nailed the PK in the 15th minute for a 1-0 Cottagers lead.
Everton found the answer in the 27th minute.
Danny Stracualursi nailed the winner to level this sucker at one all.
The Toffees hit the match winner in the 73rd minute. Marouane Fellaini noodled home the winner. A great cross into the box by Landon Donovan set up this puppy.
Everton is on to the next round.
Tottenham escaped with a tough 1-0 win over Watford.
Rafael Vander Vaart scored the match winner in the 42nd minute.
Spurs are on to the next round.
Championship side Watford gave Spurs all they could handle. The Hornets rattled the cages twice but couldn’t push the ball across the finish line.
