Sports/Futebol

Palmeiras held serve. Verdao defeated Santos 3-1 Sunday afternoon to increase their lead to five points over second place Sao Paulo.

Palmeiras and Santos played a scoreless first half. Both teams came out smoking in the second half. Santos drew first blood when Luizinho ripped the twines in the 54th minute to give Santos a short lived 1-0 lead. Luizinho received a great centering pass from Neymar. The ball just rolled through the entire box. Luizinho one timed the shot.

Verdao came roaring back to score three straight goals to secure the win. Diego Sousa tied this baby up in the 63rd minute. Sousa’s bounced header beat the keeper to the right post.

Palmeiras scored the go-ahead goal nine minutes later on Figueroa’s crossing ball into the box. De Pinho was left alone in the front of the goal.  All De Pinho had to do was kiss the ball into the back of the net in the 72nd minute for a 2-1 Palmeiras lead.

Wagner Love knocked home the gimmie rebound in the 76th minute for the final score. Xavier drove the ball straight to the rack. He fired a weak shot that went between Felipe’s wickets. The ball rolled to just short of the goal line. Love skipped in the gimmie.

In the shocker of the day, Botafogo stunned Goias 3-1. Botafogo is fighting for their very lives. Jobson, Oliveira, and Lima tickled the twines for Fogao. Goias had a chance to move up in the standings to second place. No dice on this Sunday.

Fogao is still in the I am outta here zone. Botafogo is in 17th place with 28 points. Santo Andre has 28 points as well but Ramalho safe for now to two more wins than Botafogo.

My Boo- Mengao picked up a huge 2-0 win over cross town-hated foe Fluminense. Adriano scored twice for Rubro-Negro. These two goals give “The Emperor” a league leading fifteen goals. Way to go garoto.

Adriano’s first goal was set up with a great steal by Ze Roberto. Roberto fed the ball to Adriano. The Emperor attacked. Adriano spilt the seam in the “D” and fired a perfect shot that hit the cross bar and dipped into the back of the net in the 51st minute.

Leonardo Moura set up Adriano’s second with a great crossing ball. Adriano received the pass and drove right. He stopped and popped. Good. Mengao is up 2-0 after 64th minute.

This was all she wrote.

Adriano said he was looking for some revenge against former Mengao coach Cuca. The Emperor got it by scoring two goals. Maybe the smack was worth it. It sure looked like it on the pitch.

Flamengo is now in sixth place with 41 points. Rubro-Nero trails fifth place club Goias by four points.

We are headed down the stretch run in the Campeonato Brasil. The title is still up for grabs. Palmeiras is in the catbird seat but Sao Paulo, Atletico-MG, Internacional, and Goias still have a shot to win this baby.
