Both Manchester United and Chelsea struggled mightily in their matches today. The Red Devils fell behind early before rallying to defeat Wolfsburg 2-1. United applied lots of pressure but they could not find the back of the net until the second half.
Wolfsburg had their chances. The German champs drew first blood. Edin Dzeko out leaped Red Devil defender Patrice Evra to head home the go ahead goal in the 55th minute to make 1-0 Wolfsburg.
Manchester United responded when Ryan Giggs free kick went bam off the wall and went spinning into the left corner to level this sucker at one all after fifty-five minutes.
The Red Devils hit the match winner in the 78th minute. Berbatov and Giggs played a great two-man game inside the box. This set up Michael Carrick deft strike from just inside the top of the box that beat the keeper Diego Benaglio far left corner to give Man U the win.
The Red Devils had their chances. Rooney as well as Berbatov and Anderson each missed golden opportunities to put this bay out of reach early.
Chelsea seemed to have a hang over from the Wigan match. The Blues played without heart. Chelsea was lucky to escape with 1-0 win over Apoel Nicosia. Nicolas Anelka curled the ball into the roof of the net in the 18th minute. Teammate Juliano Belletti set it up with a great run down the right sideline. At the last moment, he fired a pass to Anelka who lingered just a step behind the play. This drew the “D” and gave Anelka a clear shot on goal.
This was the only spark the Blues showed all match long. Except for an opening rush by Apoel, the Blues controlled the match.
Chelsea made bad pass after bad pass. They played with a lackadaisical attitude. This type of attitude can bite you in the butt if you are not careful.
If you let an inferior team hang around long, enough they can beat you with one snap of the finger.
A blind squirrel can find an acorn every once in a while. So, you better be careful. With Liverpool on the horizon this Sunday, the Blues better be ready.
I think the Blues had some of the starch taken out of them when they lost to Wigan. They lost a little bit of their magic. This is not the time to have a let down. Yet, Liverpool is playing like crap too.
This is not a good sign for both Liverpool and Chelsea when they square off on Sunday at Stamford Bridge.
