Who would thunk it. Fiorentina blew out Liverpool 2-0. This match wasn’t it even close. The Reds left their “A” game back in England. Stevan Jovetic received a great pass from Zanetti. His teammate Mutu was offside. This caused the Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina to face a two on one situation. No contest. Jovetic nailed the winner just underneath Reina’s left paw to make 1-0 after twenty-eight minutes.
Nine minutes later Jovetic found the mark again on a great deflection shot to make it 2-0 Fiorentina at the thirty-seven minute mark.
On the day, Fiorentina was faster and quicker than Liverpool. The Reds looked slow and out of sync all match long.
This was a bad loss for the Reds.
Arsenal completely outplayed and out classed Olympiacos to win at home 2-0. The Gunners Robin Van Persie received a pass from teammate Eduardo. Persie rattled the net to give Arsenal 1-0 lead after seventy-eight minutes.
The whole sequence of events was set up by a great pass from Fabregas to Eduardo.
Fabregas made another great pass eight minutes later. Fabregas connected with Arshavin. Arshavin back heeled the ball into the net to seal the deal in the eighty-sixth minute to make 2-0. This was all she wrote baby. Stick a fork Olympiacos for they were surely done.
Arsenal is now 2-0 on group play.
The Gunners should have had a boatload of goals but they just missed each time. This was a thoroughly one-sided affair.
The line read like this: Arsenal had 26 shots. Eleven of those were on goal. The Gunners controlled possession of the ball for sixty-six percent of the time. Olympiacos had eight shots. Two of the shots were on goal. Olympiacos control possession of the ball for thirty-four percent of the time.
Guess what folks you don’t win many matches with stats like this. This was a classic ass whopping.
I can be a stats freak. The baseball, basketball, and football nut comes out in me. Futebol purest hate this but this is me. Too bad so get over it.
The score should have been 10-0 but when the Gunners were masons. This gives the opponent a chance to win. Brick City is a basketball term for a team that can’t hit the broadside of a barn with a cannon.
You have to learn how to finish. This is very hard. When an inferior opponent hangs around crazy things can happen. Ask the Pittsburgh Steelers this past Sunday when they lost to a sub par Cincinatti Bungles, I mean the Bengals on a last second TD 23-20. The Steelers should have killed em.
The Bums (Phillies) are another prime example of this. They have had trouble holding on to leads. The closer Brad Lidge can’t even hold on to a lead to save his life. He has blown eleven saves this season and this will cause the Phillies to have lots of problems in post-season play.
Finishing is the key. Other than that, Arsenal played a great match. Later today Manchester United takes on German side Wolfsburg. Chelsea has a date with Apoel Nicosia.

City came up big against West Ham winning 3-1. Tevez scored twice for City. This was a huge “MO” swing for Manchester City. After having lost a heartbreaker to cross-town rivals Manchester United the week before, City answered the bell with a resounding thump on the top of West Ham’s head.
This win keeps City on pace with league leaders Manchester United. The Red Devils have 18 points. But, please keep in mind that City has a game in hand. This game in hand can make all the difference. Manchester City sits in fifth spot with 15 points. Tottenham andLiverpool are ahead of City on goal difference.
Liverpool is third and Tottenham is fourth.
Finally, this high priced talent is beginning to pay some dividends for City. Tevez finally broke into the scoring column with a two-goal day. Craig Bellamy leads City scorers with three.
Fernando Torres leads the pack with eight goals. Red Devils Wayne Rooney has six goals. Chelsea’s Drogba and Sunderland’s Darren Bent have six scores as well.
Manchester United’s keeper Ben Foster is tied for second in keeper stats. Foster has three clean sheets and he is giving up an average .086 goals per game. This isn’t too shabby. The problem is that Foster looks very uncomfortable in goal. He is not that smooth. Foster has faced 26 shots. He has given up six goals. Foster has 20 saves. On a pure numbers basis this is very good. Maybe all the criticism concerning Foster is unfounded. This is just a guess.
Palmeiras is in first place in the Campeonato with 50 points. Goias is second with 45 points and Sao Paulo is third with 45 as well but Tricolor has one less win than Goias. Goias has thirteen while Sao Paulo has twelve.
Champions league resumes later today. Arsenal takes on Olympiacos at Emirates. Liverpool battles Fiorentina at Artemio. Manchester United and Chelsea play on Wednesday.
Both River Plate and Boca are falling off the face of the earth. River Plate blew a two-goal lead and wound up with a tie against Gimnasia.
Estudiantes dumped Boca 2-1. This was Boca’s third straight loss. With the win, Estudiantes moves into first place of the Apertura with 16 points. Boca is in 13th place with five points. River is in 14th place on goal difference. River Plate has five points as well.

Palmeiras was very lucky to come away with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Atletico-PR on Saturday. Verdao took the lead just before half time on a wicked strike by Figueroa in the 43rd minute for a 1-0 lead. Verdao Alviverde decided to sit back and play the defensive shell game in the second half. Palmeiras packed it in and waited and waited. Atletico-PR attacked and attacked until the Chico headed home the equalizer in the 61st minute. The ball looked like it went off one of the Verdao defenders. This goal was set up by a great corner kick deep into the box. The ball was placed directly left of center. Chico used his head to direct the ball top shelf right.
Verdao scored the go ahead goal in the 69th minute on a great on touch shot by Danilo to make 2-1 Palmeiras. I loved set up on this ball. It was great shot pass into the box. Danilo got his big toe on the ball and nailed it.
Atletico-PR came close three times in the waning moments but could not get the equalizer. One of shots was a pure naked shot on the goal the cat hooked it. Can you say choke city. This was a much-needed three points for Verdao. Palmeiras is six points clear of Sao Paulo. Tricolor has huge derby match with Corinthians on Sunday. Sao Paulo needs all three points. A tie or a loss will not do.
Cruzeiro defeated Barueri 1-0. Gilberto scored the lone goal of the match in the 72nd minute.
The derby battle between Sao Paulo and Corinthians ended in a classic one all draw. Both Timao and Tricolor “D” blew it. The first dumbo mistake was Sao Paulo’s. It was a mix up of grand proportions between the keeper and the defender that gave Ronaldo a pure and simple gift goal. Tricolor defender Andre Dias passed the ball back to the keeper but he over shot the mark and thus gave Ronaldo a walk in goal.
Tricolor found the equalizer in the 60th minute on huge defensive break down by Timao. Hernanes Washington slipped past two Corinthian defenders in the box. Washington was the recipient of a great pass and all he had to do was beat the keeper Felipe. Washington chipped the ball over Felipe’s head for an easy goal.
This was not the result Tricolor or Timao wanted. A victory by Sao Paulo would have kept Tricolor three points behind Palmeiras. Instead, Sao Paulo trails Campeonato leader Palmeiras by five points. Palmeiras has 50 points. Tricolor has 45 points.
At least Flamengo didn’t lose to Internacional on the road in Porto Alegre in a wild and crazy monsoon Sunday. The conditions stunk. It was a waterlogged pitch. Both teams had some good scoring opportunities however the water soaked pitch stopped Flamengo and Internacional from scoring.
Flamengo needed three points instead Mengao came away with one point in zero-zero draw with Colorado Inter. A draw is better than a loss.
Flamengo is in eighth place with 38 points. Rubro-Negro is twelve points off the pace. There are thirteen matches left in the season. Wins are of an up most importance if Flamengo is to move into the top five. Winning the Campeonato is out of the question but miracles can happen if one believes.

The unthinkable happened. Chelsea lost to Wigan 3-1. This loss drops the Blues to second place. This was Chelsea’s first loss of the season. Liverpool kicked ass-winning 6-1 over a hapless Hull City 6-1. Man U shutout Stoke City 2-0. Arsenal squeaked past Fulham 1-0.
The line from Toby Keith’s song the more things change the more things stay the same is apropos of Saturday’s play in the EPL.
These results make me a very happy camper. Yes, I am a Man U fan. Dimitar Berbatov was the father of the first child. This was a classic tic, tack, doe futebol. Berbatov nailed the right footer from close range in the 62nd minute for a 1-0 Red Devil lead.
O’Shea used his noodle for the second goal in the 77th minute for a 2-0 Man U lead. A great ball into the box by Ryan Giggs set up this goal.
Rooney had some good chances but he couldn’t find the back of the net. Nani had some great scoring chances as well but he came up empty. The opportunities are there but Man U needs to work on finishing them. This is the only criticism I have with the Red Devils performance so far this season. The “D” is solid. Rio is the key. The keeper Foster is a weak spot but this can be overcome. This was another clean sheet for Foster. Way to go garoto.
This was a huge win for Manchester United.
Liverpool finally played the way all the wizards of smart and the media pundits expected them to play. A kick butt 6-1 win over Hull City. Torres had his hat trick.
Ryan Babel had two goals in this total domination of the Tigers. If this were a fight, it would have been stopped. Oh, Lord have mercy for Liverpool was out to prove they are now ready to get after it and win the EPL Title the pundits predicted for them.
Where was all this passion and fire before now? How come Liverpool started out like a bunch of little old ladies out for a Sunday afternoon walk?
Arsenal played lethargic for most of the match against Fulham. Robin Van Persie’s spilt the seam in the defense goal in the 52nd minute was the difference in the match. This goal was set up by a bad TO in the Fulham end. A bad pass by Fulham’s Paul Konchesky from just inside halfway line set up the game-winning goal. Fabregas intercepted the ball. He fired a perfect parting of the sea pass to Van Persie and that was all she wrote. Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer was hung out to dry.
Wigan handed Chelsea their lunch 3-1. This was upset city baby. Wigan came out stoked for this match. The Latics shoved the ball down Chelsea’s throats. Titus Bramble’s goal in the 16th minute set the tone for match. Bramble’s header found the left corner for a 1-0 Wigan lead.
Sure Chelsea had their chances early in the match but each time they were stopped stone cold by the Latics “D.”
Drogba got the equalizer in the 47th minute. The Latics took the lead for good when Chelsea keeper Peter Cech was given the heave hoe in the 52nd minute. Hugo Rodallega nailed the PK. Paul Scharner added another goal in the 90th minute for a 3-1 final.
This was the first win for Wigan against the top four (Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal) clubs in thirty-four tries.
Spurs got back on the winning track with a 5-0 shell lacking of Burnley.
Manchester United is first place on goal difference. The Red Devils have 18 points. Chelsea is second with 18. Liverpool is third with 15. Tottenham is fourth on goal difference. Spurs have 15 points. The Gunners are fifth with 12 points.
Manchester City takes on West Ham on Monday. If City wins, they will move into fifth place.

Today’s action looks like a sure lock for the big boys. But anything can happen in the world of sports. Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea take on mid to bottom feeders. These matches should all be sure wins but I don’t think these guys will be looking past them. A loss or a tie could spell sure doom for the Blues, Reds, Red Devils, and Gunners chances to win the EPL crown.
Manchester United takes on Stoke City. The Potters are currently in tenth spot with eight points. For Stoke City, twos are wild. They have two wins, two draws, and two losses. Can Stoke City cause a problem for Man U? Yes.
Chelsea battles Wigan. The Latics are in fifteenth place with six points.
Liverpool has a date with Hull City. The Tigers are one step above dead last. They have a mere four points.
Arsenal entertains Fulham. Fulham is in fourteenth place with six points.
City and West Ham will battle it out. West Ham is sixteenth place with four points.
My only question is will City suffer a let down after losing a close match to the Red Devils? This question and a lot more will be answered after the weekend is finished.
I still have some questions as to whether City is for real. They beat the Gunners and lost an epic battle with cross-town rival Man U. I have a sense there might be some fallout from the Man U loss. A loss or a draw might be the result against West Ham. This is just an educated guess.
When the dust finally settles from this weekends action we will find Chelsea still in the top spot. Man U will be number two.
My team Flamengo has a huge match against Internacional on Sunday. Adriano was hurt in practice and he may miss this huge match facing Rubro-Negro. Adriano banged up his thigh. With him out of the lineup, this will cause Mengao to lose. Rubro-Negro has made a habit of getting killed in Porto Alegre.
Flamengo needs to win this baby. Internacional is third place with 43 points. Flamengo needs the full three points to cut the gap to three points. A win will give Mengao 40 points. A loss will kill Flamengo’s chances of competing for the title. Yes, this is a long shot at best but it is fun to dream.
The best match of Sunday will be Sao Paulo and Corinthians. Ronaldo is back playing for Corinthians. Sao Paulo is three points behind Palmeiras. Tricolor will know the result they need when they take to the pitch on Sunday. Palmeiras battles Atletico-PR on Saturday.
Verdao should win this baby. This will force Sao Paulo to go for broke against Timao.
Happy futebol hunting and we’ll talk later on Sunday after the dust settles.

Palmeiras accomplished what they needed to do on Wednesday night. Verdao Alviverde defeated archrival Cruzeiro 2-1 and moved into sole possession of first place in the Campeonato Brasil.
Sao Paulo was breathing hard down Palmeiras’s neck. Verdao felt Sao Paulo’s hot breath on them. A win was of the utmost importance. Sao Paulo was tied with Verdao on points with 43 but Palmeiras had a game in hand. This was the game for all the marbles. Verdao Alviverde fell behind early. Cruzeiro’s Thiago Ribeiro waited just a moment before breaking on a great headed through ball that spilt Palmeiras’s defense. Ribeiro took it right to the rack and scored. Palmeiras keeper Marcos was left to hung out to dry. It was 1-0 Cruzeiro after seven minutes of play.
Two minutes later Verdao was awarded a free kick from just outside the top of the box. Sousa nailed a perfect strike to even this baby up at one all after nine minutes. Can you say “MO” buster.
The shot looked like it was tipped by one of the defenders on the wall. Nonetheless, it was a ball buster of a shot that beat the keeper Fabio dead to rights.
Four minutes into the second half, a great pass spilt the seam between two Cruzeiro defenders and all Wagner Love had to do was walk the ball into the net. Cruzeiro’s keeper Fabio tried to challenge Love but that was like trying to stop a runaway freight train with an air gun. Love side stepped Fabio and planted the ball into the back of the net.
Palmeiras finally played like they wanted to win instead of just showing up. This was a huge win. This victory may have stopped Tricolor’s chances of a four peat. Lots of futebol left to be played but this was a “MO” swing for Verdao.
Palmeiras is in first place with 47 points. Sao Paulo is second with 44 points.
Internacional tied with Universidad de Chile one all in the first leg of the round of sixteen in the Copa Sudamericana. This was a huge result for the Chilean side. The match was played in Internacional’s house in Porto Alegre. Giving up an away goal is huge for Internacional for it puts them behind the eight ball. This forces Internacional to win on the road. This could be tough.
Botafogo shut out Emelec 2-0. Renato and Andre Lima scored for Botafogo. All Botafogo needs is a tie or they can lose by one goal and still advance to the next round.
This is the kicker Botafogo is winless in their last ten Campeonato matches. Go figure Botafogo could win the Copa and be sent down to D-2 ball. This is a hoot. Only in Brasil can this happen.

The big boys Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Tottenham all advanced to the round of sixteen in Carling Cup play.
The fact is that most of the Premier League sides don’t take this competition every seriously. They field their second and third teams. Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal, and Liverpool view the Carling Cup as a place to give their young players the opportunity to play in a high stakes tournament. They use the Carling Cup as testing ground for their second and third teams.
The Red Devils played most of the match against Wolves a man down. Danny Welbeck’s strike at the 66th minute was all the Red Devils needed to beat Wolves 1-0. Welback weaved his way through the Wolves “D” for an easy goal.
Salomon Kalou’s goal in the 52nd minute gave Chelsea a 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers. Ashley Cole set up Kalou’s goal with a beautiful pass slipped between two Queens Park Rangers.
Tottenham blasted Preston 5-0. Peter Crouch had a hat trick for Spurs.
City used most of their regulars but they needed an extra period to beat Fulham 2-1. Fulham fielded their second stringers. Fulham almost came away with the win but Kolo Toure’s goal in extra time gave City the win.
Some folks have a cow that most of the Premier League teams field inferior squads but the reality of the situation is this Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, and the rest spend big bucks on talent. They want see if these players can handle the pressure however the real reason is that Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal, and Liverpool don’t want their main men to get hurt so they don’t play em. The truth is these inferior second and third teams fielded by the Reds, Blues, Gunners, and Red Devils would all be first-string players on Championship, League One, and League Two clubs.
The Red Devils, Blues, Reds, and Gunners are geared up to play in the EPL and Champions League. The Carling Cup and FA Cup are not a top priority for them.
The big bucks come from winning the EPL and Champions League not the Carling Cup and FA Cup.
The truth hurts.
As of this writing Palmeiras is leading Cruzeiro 2-1 after seventy-five minutes. This is a huge match match for Palmeiras. If Verdao wins they will move into sole possession of first place. We will talk about this and the Copa Sudamericana play on Thursday.

What in the heck is going on in Argentina? Two of the most storied futebol clubs in AFA history Boca and River have been struggling big time. River Plate and Boca have won eighty-seven domestic and international titles between them. Now they are stinking the joint out. This is funny and sad all at the same time. I bet my buds Doctor Luis Palau is having a cow. He is probably scratching his head in complete amazement at the horrible misfortunes of Boca and River Plate.
Boca blew a 2-1 second half lead and lost to Godoy Cruz 3-2. Christian Chavez booted home the match winner in the 90th minute to spell doom for Boca.
You can say what you want but Boca is heap big trouble. There is lots infighting on the side. Riquelme and Martin Palermo are not getting along. Boca is divided and they play that way. It is like Terrell Owens except on steroids. Screw you; I will play for myself and not the team.
Alfio Basile is a class coach. He has led Boca to five titles in his last stint as manager but this year he is leading a sinking ship. This is akin to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Good players but this baby is taking on water so fast that Boca is drowning in its own garbage.
Basile resigned but team manager Carlos Bianchi refused to accept the resignation. My guess is that Bianchi doesn’t want this baby hung solely on his neck. Bianchi needs some cover so he needs to have Basile around to deflect the problems Boca is having.
Lets just call this a what it is quiz. The root of the problems that Boca and River are having is Grondona. He is the idiot who screwed up the AFA. I don’t care what anyone says Grondona has led this destruction of AFA futebol.
River, Boca, and the rest were spending money that they didn’t have like a bunch of drunken sailors. Grondona went along with the brilliant plan. He engineered the government take over of the TV contract so these drunken mad owners would be bailed out instead of having to suffer the consequences of their actions like the rest of us folks.
Grondona placed all the blame on private enterprise instead of looking in the mirror to see who the real problem is. I sure bet it isn’t the TV guys.
River Plate is sinking fast too. These clowns lost to Arsenal 1-0. River Plate defender Maximiliano Coronel thought he was playing football instead of futebol and tackled Arsenal attacker Alexander Medina. Medina nailed the PK and that was all she wrote. Another loss for River.
Boca is in thirteenth place with five points. River is currently in fifteenth place with four points.
Boca has not won at home since the Apertura began in August.
If this keeps up, Argentina futebol will become a joke and that is very sad. Some of the best futebol players in world come from Argentina.
Grondona needs to go. Fire him.
If you think I am kidding just look at how the national team is performing under Grondona’s tutelage. Argentina is in position to not make the 2010 World Cup.
If you think I am letting Maradona off the hook, I am not. The wizard of smart Grondona hired Maradona.
When Grondona fires Maradona, do you think this will fix the problem. Not in this lifetime. The only thing that saves Grondona’s hide is that Uruguay, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, and Venezuela are crap.
Estudiantes, Velez Sarsfield, Banfield, Rosario Central, Independiente all carry part of the blame too. For these clubs spend over 182 millions dollars that they didn’t have and thus forced to delay the start of Apertura for two weeks.
Instead of taking care of the players, these owners sell them off to highest European bidder. Except this time no one was buying due to the world wide financial meltdown. However, this didn’t stop these owners from spending money they didn’t have.
The play of the national is a reflection of the deep-rooted problems the AFA is having. Except this time the god of government can’t bail them out of this mess.
My friend Robert says it best; Argentina thinks all they have to do is walk out on the pitch. The other team will quit. Not this time.
Does 1970 ring a bell?
Sports/Futebol
What was I telling you? Flamengo needed for the teams at the top of the table to either lose or tie. Guess what? This is happening at a very alarming rate.
Sao Paulo was comfortably in front of Santo Andre 1-0 however; Tricolor “D” fell asleep thus allowing Ramalhao to get the equalizer in the 71stminute. Pablo Escobar slipped his low shot right through Rogerio Ceni’s wickets to tie this baby up at one all. This tie might have cost Sao Paulo a chance for their fourth straight Campeonato title.
Flamengo took care of business. Rubro-Negro shut out Coritiba 3-0. Adriano added to his league leading goal tally with a great strike in the 57th minute. Adriano received a great through ball. All he had to do was beat the keeper. Adriano’s chip shot tickled the twines for his thirteenth goal of the season.
Willans scored on a power shot from the top of the box in the 88thminute. Petkovic started off the match with a loft shot of a free kick from just outside the top of the box. The ball looped over the wall and into the net in the 33rdminute. The keeper was totally defenseless on this play. It was a great shot by Petkovic.
This is about time that Mengao started playing on both ends of the pitch. Maybe Andrade is the right coach for this club. This is the second straight shutout win for Rubro-Negro.
Way to go garoto.
Flamengo moves up the table to eighth place with 37 points. Palmeiras is still in first place with 44 points. Sao Paulo has 44 points as well but Verdao has a game in hand. Palmeiras and Cruzeiro will battle Wednesday September 23. If Verdao Alviverde can win, they will have first place all to themselves.
Internacional is third with 43. Goias is fourth with 42. Goias picked up a huge 4-1 win over Corinthians.
Sports/Futebol
Do you want to talk about racehorse style futebol? Manchester United and Manchester City played it. Both sides raced up and down the pitch. Both City and the Red Devils traded goals. It went back and forth until Michael Owens goal in the dying moments of the match sealed the deal for Manchester United. It was a wild and thrilling 4-3 win for the Red Devils over rival City.
This was rock em sock em futebol. In basketball terms, this was a barnburner. This was balls to the wall futebol.
Wayne Rooney started off the goal parade. Rooney right-footed shot low left in the second minute gave the Red Devils a 1-0 lead.
City found the answer in the sixteenth minute. Garth Berry’s blast from right outside the top of the box knotted this baby up at one all.
Darren Fletcher header from dead center in the box in the 49th minute gave Man U the lead again 2-1.
City’s Craig Bellamy answered in the 52nd minute. His boot ripped top shelf right to pull City even at two all. Former Red Devil Carlos Tevez assisted in both City’s goals so far.
Darren Fletchers close range header tickled the twines to put Man U back into the lead 3-2 at the eighty-minute mark.
City found the answer again in the 90th minute. Red Devils Rio Ferdinand errant pass led to Craig Bellamy’s match tying goal. Bellamy nailed the left corner from six yards out to make three all.
Low and behold Manchester United’s Michael Owen fired the winner from dead center of the box was all she wrote. Man U escaped with a wild 4-3 win over City.
This was a good match. It went back and forth. City and Man U gave each other their best Sunday punches. I love it. I am glad the Red Devils won. This was a huge win for Manchester United.
City has arrived. They will be a force to be reckoned with.
Chelsea showed who was boss when they shutout Spurs 3-0. Spurs tried to put up a good fight but the Blues were just too strong. Cole’s header off a great flick pass from Drogba gave Chelsea a 1-0 lead after thirty minutes. Michael Ballack and Drogba added second half goals for Chelsea.
There was some really bad news for Tottenham. Defenders Ledley King and Sebastian Bassong were lost due to injury.
Has the bloom fallen off the rose for Spurs? We will see.
Chelsea has a clean sheet with six wins and zero losses. The Blues sit atop the table with 18 points. Manchester United is second with 15 points. Liverpool is third with 12. Arsenal is in seventh place with nine points.
