English futebol is in the books for this season. Oh, what a glorious season it was. Manchester United completed its three-peat in The EPL but lost a chance for a Champions League two-peat by losing to Barcelona 2-0.

Liverpool hung in there and almost won The EPL title but had to settle for second. The Reds made it to the semifinals of The Champions League.

Chelsea had a season of turmoil and managed to have a great season after all by finishing third. The Blues made to the semifinals of The Champions league, and won The FA Cup.

One last match was played yesterday. Chelsea defeated Everton 2-1 in The FA Cup.

I made sure didn’t disturb my wife when I got up at six am left coast time to make sure I was ready for the match at seven am.

Louis Saha scored the fastest goal in FA Cup history when he fired a rocket that scorched the nets twenty-five seconds into the match.

Chelsea found the answer in the 21st minute when the Blues played tick, tack, doe passing outside the box. Drogba headed home the winner to tied it up 1-1.

Lampard’s goal in the 72nd minute was a display of shear power and strength. Lampard was knocked off the ball. He regained his balanced and fired a blast that ricocheted off of Everton keeper Tim Howard to make it 2-1. Howard was in the right spot but he was helpless to stop the blast.

Yesterday was a wild one in Campeonato do Brasil. Botafogo and Sport Recife tied two all. Sport jumped to an early 2-0 but they gave up two late goals and snatched a draw from the jaws of victory. To make matters even worse for Sport they lost Hamilton on a stupid penalty in the 73rd minute. This penalty enabled Botafogo to turn the screws on Sport, which resulted in goal by Fahel in the 85th to level the match at two all.

Bad playing and a dumb penalty cost Sport a victory in Botafogo’s house.

The basic translation goes like this Botafogo is very happy with result-a tie but they are not satisfied. Botafogo played very nervous and they place them at a big disadvantage.  Botafogo needs victories.

Goias blasted Coritiba 3-1 in Cortiba’s house. Goias scored three first half goals to salt this baby away early. Goias took it to Coritiba from the opening whistle.

Atletico-MG and Santo Andre played to a nil-nil draw. This very boring futebol but we’ll take it. The three points that is.

There is big news coming out  Rio de Janeiro. Adriano will play for Flamengo today. Adriano left Italian club Inter in March. He said he was home sick. Now Flamengo is giving him a second chance. Yes, Adriano has lots of baggage but this should really help Flamengo’s attack. Flamengo couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn with howitzer. We will see if Adriano will produce wins. The jury is out.

That’s a wrap.

The first leg of the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals is in the books. So far, I don’t know, maybe a few surprises but don’t quote me on it.

On Thursday night Palmeiras and Uruguay’s Nacional kissed their sister at one all. Palmeiras scored the opening salvo when Souza banged home the winner in 55th minute. A beautiful initial against the grain run by Souza created this goal. His teammate Keirrison fired a frozen rope pass to Souza and all Souza had to do was blast the winner home.

Nacional  applied tremendous pressure from that point on. Nacional’s teenage striker Santiago Garcia slipped through the Swiss cheese Palmeiras defense and knocked home the equalizer in the 80th minute.

That was the old ball game.

The crowd went bananas after the tie in Palmeiras house.

Now it’s on to Montevideo next week.

www.uol.com.br had a cow over this result.

The basic translation goes like this. Palmeiras didn’t play. Palmeiras need to win instead they tied and this will probably eliminate them from The Copa. This tie will cost them dearly.

They played like crap. They deserved to tie. It was bad.

In the other quarterfinal match played on Thursday, Argentina’s Estudiantes defeated Defensor Sporting in Montevideo 1-0. Desabato headed home a easy winner in the 13th minute for Estudiantes. This was set up teammate Juan Sebastian Veron’s perfectly placed corner kick.

Estudiantes, Nacional, Cruzeiro, and Gremio have the advantage heading into the next round  that will be played on June 17th and June 18th.

Hot off the presses. Boca Juniors fired headman Carlos Ischia yesterday. Boca gave him the heave hoe because the team has been on a steady downhill decline for the past few months. Ischia will manager the team for the last three matches of the season. Rumors  have it that former Boca manager Carlos Bianchi will be hired. Under Bianchi Boca was great. However, his contract states that he will not succeed his close friend Ischia. But you know as well as I contracts are made to be broken.

Check out these sites. They are hot.

The aftermath of the Champions League blow out of Manchester United by Barcelona reveals a few of points that need to be made.

First Barcelona seized control of the match from the very outset. Barcelona dictated the tempo of the match. Yes, Manchester United had two golden opportunities to score but did not convert.

In my years of playing, broadcasting, writing, and coaching sports, the team that dictates tempo will win.

On this day, Barcelona had fresher legs. The grueling schedule that Manchester United had to play leading up to this match caught up with them. Manchester United played just about every week since December. On top of that, the wizards of smart at The EPL decided to play the final matches of the season on Sunday instead of Saturday. This gave the Red Devils only one day of rest instead of two. How can I say only one. Remember Tuesday is a travel day.

I can hear some of you screaming Barcelona had to play a tough schedule. True, but The Spanish league takes two to three weeks off during Christmas.
The EPL has no such break. And, Manchester United had to play in The FIFA World Club Championship in December.

The Red Devils had to play make up games that were scheduled mid-week from February until May.

Manchester United played like a tired team. They were.

Always remember this when you are the defending champ the other team always enters the game with a chip on their shoulder. They want to embarrass you. They want to make you look bad. They will bring their “A” game. You better be ready.
Barcelona played like a team possessed.

Prior, to the Champions League Final, all matches are always played in two stages. If stink the joint out one game you always have the second leg to right the ship.
Not the final. It’s one and done. It is just like the Super Bowl, and The NCAA Championship. There is no room for error. You can’t have a bad game. During the season, you have lots of room for error.

If both of these teams played ten times, I believe Manchester United would win five and Barcelona would win five. They are that evenly matched.

These are my thoughts.

We will talk Copa Libertadores another day.

Check out my buds Doctor Palau.

I was really looking forward to The Champions League Final. I wanted Manchester United to win. No such luck. It was a classic blow out. This was blow out city baby. Barcelona came out loaded for bear. Manchester United was loaded for a whimper.

The first ten minutes of the match told the story. Barcelona applied the pressure Manchester United couldn’t handle it. Samuel Eto’o goal was thing of beauty. He broke free and found the back of the net in the 10th minute. This was horrible defending by Manchester United’s Vidac.

Say what you want but Barcelona was the superior side today. Barcelona took it to the Red Devils throughout the entire match. Sure, Man U had a few good counter attacks but it was more a of token effort.

Barcelona wanted more.

Cristiano Ronaldo looked like he was going through the motions.

I thought Manchester United’s defense was going to make the difference. Not on this day. Messi, Eto’o, Xavi, and old Arsenal nemesis Thierry Henry proved to be too much of a load to handle for Manchester United.

Lionel Messi’s header in the 70th minute sealed the deal for Barcelona. It was beautiful pass by teammate Xavi and all Messi had to do was head the ball into the naked goal.
Enough said. Barcelona is The Champions League Champs.

The quarterfinals of The Copa Libertadores opened up last night. Two Brasilian heavyweights went at it Cruzeiro and Sao Paulo in Belo Horizonte. Cruzeiro won in their house 2-1.

Cruzeiro scored first blood in the 45th minute when Gerson Magrao waltzed into the box and found teammate Leonardo Silva. All Silva needed to do was head the ball into the net. He did and Cruzeiro lead 1-0 at the break

Sao Paulo found the equalizer on the other side of half time when Washington fired a rocket in the 56th minute to this puppy up at one all.

Ze Carlos scored the match winner in the 87th minute to seal the deal for Cruzeiro.
Most important for Sao Paulo is they picked up a very valuable away goal.

Uol.com.br said about the match:
O Cruzeiro não vencia o São Paulo há nove partidas. Na noite desta quarta-feira, escolheu aquele que pode ser considerado um dos confrontos mais importantes no histórico de encontros das duas equipes, venceu por 2 a 1 no Mineirão e encerrou um tabu que já durava cinco anos.

On the other Copa quarterfinal match played yesterday saw FC Caracas and Gremio tie at one all in Venezuela.

Caracas scored in the first minute of the match when Cichero headed the ball into the net. Gremio just stood by and watched as the goal was scored. It was horrible defense on Gremio’s part.

Gremio found the equalizer in the 74th minute when Fabio Santos header touched the twines to make one all.

That’s a wrap for today. Champions League is in the books. The EPL is done as well.

Sports/Futebol

Today is the day every futebol fan has been waiting for The Champions League Final. Manchester United takes on Barcelona. I can’t wait. I have been counting days until this day has finally arrived.

This is a classic match up.

It has all the drama.

Two story book clubs steeped in history and tradition meet in a battle of the titans.

If you are looking a traditional analysis, go to another place. I won’t bore you with it.

My take. I am pulling for the Red Devils.  I want to see them complete a two-peat. I mean Man U has Tevez, Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Sir Alex Ferguson, and the rest of the boys.

Barcelona has arguably one of the best strikers in the world Lionel Messi. This cat can score from any place on the pitch. Messi will come out firing as soon as he arrives in the parking lot.

Man U has THE “D”. Barcelona has THE BIG “O”. Man U has a chip on their shoulders. No one expected the Red Devils to compete for a two-peat. Man U has good “O”.

Tevez will be the wild card. Messi and Tevez are teammates on The Argentina National Team.

Tevez is mister excitement. This cat is canned electricity. When Tevez arrives on the pitch, his teammates go bananas. With Tevez in the line up Manchester United is propelled into the fifth dimension. No, it’s not the group.

This is nut-cutting time for both of these storied futebol clubs.

Barcelona has been a major disappointment the past few years in Champions League play. They are always the bridesmaids. Maybe this time lady luck will shine upon them.

So, get out the chips, soda, and coffee. Pull up a big huge comfy chair. Park it for a few hours. Take in all the sights and sounds of Rome. Enjoy the match and when its over thank God for all the blessings of the day. For today will be a glorious day for us all.

God bless and I will catch ya on the flip side.

Check my buds out.

Boca Juniors is sure stinking the joint out lately. Velez Sarsfield shut them out on Sunday 2-0. That’s two straight bone-crushing defeats suffered by Boca.
Both of Velez Sarsfield goals came in the second half. The first, when Hernan Lopez ripped a winner in the 61st minute. Two minutes later Jonathan Cristaldo found the back of the nest in 63rd minute to make 2-0 Velez Sarsfield.

Boca is now free falling very fast to the bottom of the table.

River Plate finally found a win. River defeated Independiente 2-0. Both teams missed a gimmie penalty shot. Diego Barrado touched the twines in the 29th minute for River make 1-0. In the 37th minute Radamel Falco Garcia rocket found the back of the net to make 2-0 River. That was the old ballgame.

Lanus moved ahead of Velez Sarsfield in the standings. On Saturday, Lanus defeated Banfield 1-0. Lanus has 31 points. Velez Sarsfield has 30 points. River Plate and Estudiantes are tied for fifth spot with 23 points but Estudiantes is ahead on goal difference. Boca has fallen to 17th spot with 16 points.

The crazies were at it again in Sao Paulo, Brasil. Just before the match between Palmeiras and Sao Paulo, the boozed up fans decided to put on a show. They threw bricks, stones, and god knows what at each other. Thirty people were suffered minor injures and about 150 were detained by the cops. Oh yeah, the match ended in nil-nil draw between Sao Paulo and Palmeiras. Sao Paulo is really struggling so far this season in the Campeonato do Brasil. Sao Paulo has zero wins, one loss, and two ties.

Sao Paulo takes on rival Cruzeiro in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday.

uol.com.br has this to say about the upcoming match on Wednesday: “O Cruzeiro não é favorito. O São Paulo é uma excelente equipe. Acho que vai ser um excelente jogo. O Cruzeiro tem de impor o ritmo, jogar bem, porque estará dentro de sua casa, no Mineirão. A gente tem de respeitar o São Paulo. É um equipe de muita tradição”, observou o zagueiro Leonardo Silva.

Cruzeiro is the favorite but the players for Cruzeiro deeply respect Sao Paulo. Sao Paulo is a very good team but Cruzeiro needs to win at their house.
Ronaldo will be out at least two weeks due to an injured calf muscle. He missed Corinthians 2-1 win over Barueri on Saturday. This is Ronaldo’s first real competition since he blew out his knee almost about a year ago.

My guess Ronaldo’s body is breaking down due to the strenuous nature of world-class competitive futebol. He’s over thirty and maybe its time for him to retire. Just a thought, that’s all.

Sports/Futebol

When the dust finally settled and all the bellyaches and crying by Middlesbrough, Newcastle, and Sunderland proved to be just a bunch of noise signifying nothing. Manchester United fielded their B team and defeated Hull City 1-0.

United’s Danny Gibson fired a lethal strike from 35 meters out in the 24th minute for the only score of the match. Gibson’s laser ripped the top right shelf. Hull City’s keeper Boaz Myhill never even saw it coming. Myhill made a feeble attempt to stop the shot but in reality, he never had a prayer to come close to stopping the Gibson rocket.

The way Manchester United’s “B” team played showed the rest of The EPL the Red Devils cupboard will be well stocked for many years.

As predicted, Aston Villa defeated Newcastle 1-0. Own goal by Newcastle’s Damian Duff in the 38th minute sealed the Magpies fate. Duff deflected a shot by Aston Villa’s Gareth Berry into Newcastle’s net. Too bad for Newcastle but those things happen when your team stinks and this loss send them packing. The sixteen-year EPL run for Newcastle is over.

West Ham beat Middlesbrough 2-1. This loss sent Middlesbrough packing. Middlesbrough eleven-year run ended too.

The three teams headed out are West Brom, Middlesbrough, and Newcastle.
Everton defeated Fulham 2-0 thus hanging on to the fifth spot in The EPL and the automatic berth into The Europa Championship.

Aston Villa will have to play in The Europa Championship qualify round.
The Europa Championship is the old UEFA.

The EPL is wrapped and now my attention is focused on Brasil Futebol, The Copa Libertadores, Argentina Futebol, and the World Cup.

Finally, Flamengo played futebol the way I knew they could. Flamengo defeated Santo Andre 2-1. This was Flamengo’s first win of the young season. Josiel scored both goals for Flamengo and they were both magnificent. The first came in the 32nd minute when a beautifully placed corner kick into the box was headed in by Josiel to give Flamengo 1-0 lead.

Flamengo’s defense fell asleep in the 43rd minute and Santo Andre’s Nunes found teammate Ricardo Conceicao at the top of the box. Conceicao blasted the winner home.

Josiel’s breakaway goal in the 66th minute sealed the deal for Flamengo.
Josiel flicked the ball over the head defenseless Santo Andre keeper Neneca. Neneca had to leave the goal to confront Josiel who was streaking towards the goal unabated.

Flamengo played much better. They finally have their heads in the game. With the win Flamengo leaped frog up the table from next to last to tenth spot.

Internacional is in first place with nine points. Nautico and Atletico-MG are tied for second with seven points.

Tomorrow we’ll talk more Brasil Futebol and a little Argentina Futebol.

The World Cup qualifiers begin on June 6th. Argentina’s headman Maradona named his team for the June 6th match with Columbia. He liked the way defender Nicholas Otamedi and striker Gonzalo Bergessio performed in their debut friendly 3-1 victory over Panama last week. Maradona rewarded both players by naming them to the World Cup squad.

Argentina has struggled in the last go round of World Cup qualifiers. Argentina is in fourth spot with 19 points.

Paraguay is first with 24 points.

Brasil is second with 21 points.

Chile is third with 20 points.

Argentina is fourth with 19 points.

Brasil will take on fifth place Uruguay on June 6h in Montevideo.

Both Ronaldo and Ronaldinho were left off the squad.

Headman Dunga was put under a lot of pressure to name both men to the squad. Dunga defended his actions by stating, Ronaldo needed more time to be match fit before he would conisder him for the squad and that Ronaldinho was going through a tough time at AC Milan because he wasn’t playing.

Ronaldinho is a good player but dude you have to grow up and deal with the fact sometimes you have to sit. That’s part of being a professional futebol player. Grow up Dude.

Dunga thought it was best that young guns Kaka and Robinho led the attack.

In a big surprise move, The Duck Alexandre Pato was named to the squad. This cat has been on fire lately. The Duck has scored 20 goals. I think he is ready to perform at the next level.

Boca Juniors headman Carlos Ischia is under the gun after Boca’s humiliating elimination from The Copa last Thursday at the Bombonera or The Bon-bon box.

This was the first time in six years Boca was eliminated from The Copa on their home turf.

The EPL season is finished on Sunday. Yep, I blew it. I can’t add nor subtract. I can’t figure what day comes after Sunday. It is Tuesday right?

The crybabies are out in full force. Please Sir Alex, don’t rest you regulars so we can have a chance to get out of the heave hoe zone.  Newcastle, Middlesbrough, and Sunderland want Manchester United to play Rooney, Ronaldo, Vidac, and the rest. You cats are nuts. It’s only two days of rest between Sunday and Wednesday. Man U is going for a two-peat.  This just happens to be the biggest match of Manchester United’s lives. Oh Yeah, forget it. It’s only The Champions League Finals. It’s no big deal.

Guess what? You clowns at Middlesbrough, Sunderland, and Newcastle stink. I can smell the stench from here.

The blame rests squarely on Alan Shearer, Gareth Southgate, and Ricky Sbragia shoulders for putting crappy teams on the pitch week in and week out. My advice Alan, Gareth, and Ricky manage you own team. You clowns don’t have the right to tell another manager who he can play and who he can’t. Your teams stink so get over it.

Let’s look at the crybaby zone.

West Brom is headed out. They aren’t crying in their beers like some folks I know. West Brom knows that they stink to high heaven.

Sunderland takes on Chelsea.

Middlesbrough battles West Ham.

Newcastle needs a win over Aston Villa.

Middlesbrough has 32 points.

Newcastle has 34 points.

If Newcastle can beat Aston Villa that just might push them out of the crybaby drop zone.  Sunderland isn’t going to beat Chelsea.  I don’t care where they play it is not going to happen in this lifetime. They can play on the moon or The Stadium of Lights Sunderland won’t win.

Aston Villa has a lot to play for. Aston Villa needs a win to have a shot to move past Everton into fifth spot. If Everton loses and Aston Villa wins, Aston Villa will have direct entry into the Europa League playoffs.

Everton battles Fulham.

Besides the battle for the drop zone Aston Villa and Everton have a lot at stake too.

The final EPL Sunday should be a glorious one.

I think I have it right this time.

Boca entered Thursday’s match against Defensor Sporting with a huge advantage. Boca picked up two valuable away goals in a two-two tie in Montevideo last week.

Boca trails 1-0 as we head into the final moments of the match with Defensor Sporting. Defensor’s Diego Sousa scored on a lethal strike from right in front of the goalmouth in the 28th minute.

The clock is going tick, tick, tick. Boca is applying lots of pressure but Defensor won’t cave in. Defensor leads on aggregate 3-2.

The match is over. Defensor with stood the intense pressure applied by Boca and now Defensor advances to the quarterfinals of The Copa Libertadores.

THIS IS A HUGE UPSET.

Boca was one of the favorites to win The Copa now they are sent home packing. It’s only a short trip. The second leg was played in Boca’s house The Bon-bon box.

Congrats to Defensor for moving on.

The upset of Boca Juniors by Defensor is all over the Brasilian headlines.

Boca has superior talent. Riquelme, Palacio, Battaglia, and Palermo are some of the best players in Argentina and the world yet Boca still loses to a side with lesser talent. Why?
Defensor wanted it more. Boca’s season in both The Copa and The Clausura has been up and down. One minute Boca looked like world-beaters the next they looked like bums. I guess the bums showed up last night.

One thing I have learned in my years, as an athlete, sportswriter, and broadcaster you can’t turn intensity on and off like a switch. You better come prepared to play. If you don’t think things like this will happen they always do. A team that has no business winning does because they came ready to play and you didn’t.

My friend Julio is probably crying right now as well as Doctor Luis Palau. Speaking of Doctor Palau when you get a chance check out his website. It’s great. Please give a peek at Hillsong as well too. Hillsong has great music and message of hope.
